UNPLUG. Digital, Adventure Edition. An Adventure Photographer on Capturing the Supermoon at Volcán de Fuego (@anton.werner ) Read the full article online at OR Tap the link in our bio. 🥾🌋 Sneak peek below:
Volcán de Fuego is not a backdrop. It is an active system, unpredictable and constantly in motion, and working near it demands preparation, tolerance for failure, and a willingness to
return empty-handed. For photographer and explorer, Anton Werner, that uncertainty is not a drawback. It is the reason he keeps coming back.
“This feeling of being up close to one of nature’s greatest powers just had a strangle hold on me. I got a little bit obsessed with volcanoes. It’s a very humbling experience to be standing on a volcano while it erupts in front of you. In a way it’s grounding, a sensation I think many people seek in the outdoors.” — Anton Werner 🌋

A few years ago I came across a photo of lightning striking an erupting volcano in Chile. Ever since then I've been wanting to capture something similar myself. There is only one problem, dirty lightning doesn't happen all that often.
Dirty lightning is basically lightning created inside the eruption plume, when all the friction of the ashes creates static energy which then discharges. It's rare, unpredictable, and pretty much impossible to plan for.
I've been going up this volcano on the regular for two months now and haven't seen it once, so I settled for the next best thing: A storm rolling in over Volcán de Fuego.
This might not be exactly what I wanted to capture, but it's nevertheless beautiful.
At least this gives me a reason to come back again. I'll get you one day dirty lightning. You've been warned.

Moving postcard from Volcán de Fuego, Guatemala.
I'm sitting on terabytes of footage and photos from this volcano, and I always struggle to decide what to do with them. Every time I start an edit, I get stuck. It feels like cutting things short would never do the experience justice.
Filming and photographing up on the volcano is a constant challenge and quite an adventure. Ash creeps into everything, gear wears down fast, weather is unpredictable, and eruptions happen on their own schedule. But this is exactly why this volcano holds a special place in my heart.
You adapt, react, and make the best of whatever gets thrown at you. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't. But when it does, a few frames feel more rewarding than anywhere else I've ever shot.
Every clip carries its own challenge and memory, which is why some moments feel like they deserve to stand alone and not be edited and cut short.
So here are just a few of my favourite shots I've gotten. More to come.

I tend to only share the end results, but a lot of times the process of creating is the best part. That's where I have to most fun, no matter how it turns out in the end. So here is a little glimpse behind the scenes. There is so much more that I could have put in there, but this is a start.

Since the weather wasn't the best for daytime missions, we went out at night to test out the flash and light setup. Been planing to do some trippy night shots for a while now. ⚡🚨

We'd been meaning to get out and shoot for a while, so when @leon.brmt came to visit a couple weeks ago, we finally made it happen. The weather didn't really play along, but we made the most of the few scattered hours of sunlight we got. Still pretty stoked with how things turned out. 🚵🏼🎥

Last trip to the volcano, last flight of my drone, last few percent of my battery. This happened

For some odd reason volcanoes have been connected to quite a few important life decisions I've made over the years. So coming back to Guatemala where I first laid eye on a volcano erupting in 2018 felt really special to me. Since last time the tourism has increased massively which can make it feel quite crowded on the volcano. But since most groups go up on the ridge in the evening, going in the morning means you're there by yourself. And let me tell you, when you stand there all by yourself above the clouds looking at a volcano erupting this close to you, it just hits different. Btw thanks @clemensweiss for running up and down the ridge so we could get this shot! (I just wish Fuego would have burped up a bigger cloud for this one)
