I couldnât change the caption on the last slides, but I wanted to share how I feel about exhibiting at Autograph.
As Iâve mentioned, this project highlights a piece of history that has long been silenced/erased (I didn't know about this until I was in my 30's). Iâve used my family archive to shed light on those affected by indentureship after slavery was abolished. My family story touches only a small part of the wider experience and the generational trauma that followed. I hope it brings some sense of healing for others who were affected.
These are some of the countries impacted by indentureship: Australia, Barbados, China, Cuba, Fiji, Grenada, Guadeloupe, Guyana, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Jamaica, Kenya, Kiribati, Malaysia, Martinique, Mauritius, Peru, Portugal, RĂŠunion, Samoa, Singapore, Solomon Islands, South Africa, Sri Lanka, St Lucia, Suriname, Tanzania, Thailand, Trinidad and Tobago, Tuvalu, Uganda, United Kingdom, United States and Vanuatu.
On a separate note, I found an old notebook from a few years ago with a page of dreams, written in big letters was Autograph. And now, itâs happened!
Thank you to Livvy, Bindi, and everyone at Autograph for making this dream a reality. The journey has been such a kind one. â¤ď¸
