Every September, NYC locks up its public poolsâleaving 54 âblue rectanglesâ of untapped potential across the city.
Architect @karolinaczeczek and photographer @annamorgowicz ask: what if we opened them back up? As saunas, stages, classrooms + climate resilience hubs?
Their project @public_pools is now on view at @citygroupnyc (through Sept 6). Donât miss it!
PUBLIC POOLS by Karolina Czeczek and Anna Morgowicz
Opening
Citygroup
104b Forsyth Street
Thursday, July 31, 2025
6-8 PM
The Public Pools research explores the history, architectural form, and social and cultural significance of swimming pools in New York City. By studying the history, design and policies around public pools, the project seeks to spark a broader conversation about public space and urban water infrastructure. The swimming pool serves as a lens to investigate larger urban issues, including the impacts of climate change, while also addressing specific concerns such as access to swimming education, cooling infrastructure, and equal access civic gathering spaces.

From AN Interior, by Kelly Pau:
âLooking into different iterations of the brandâs design, the team came across the clubhouse-like pop-ups the footwear brand used to do in the Hamptons. The features of the pop-upâbeing both cool and intimateâwas an entry point into riffing on the storeâs history. Tying in a strong sense of New Yorkâs energy and poppy hues synthesizes the history of the brand with a new, fresh look.â
