INCEPTION
Last week at Virginia Tech @vtarchschool , I had the privilege of discussing the art of making versus designing — an idea explored deeply in my book Inception. We looked at how true innovation in architecture comes from embracing urbanity, community building, reusability, and risk-taking — making for humanity.
To MakeMake is to highlight the process of making itself, which is the foundation for creating spaces that transcend functionality, from cultural hubs like Zuzeum to community-focused projects like Tandy House in Harlem. These spaces are about reflecting and inspiring the world we live in.
Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to the conversation. Let’s continue to build a future where design centers on people and their stories.

As a designer working across North America, my passion lies in shaping the future of hospitality. I’m fascinated by how our habits are evolving, how human behavior is shifting, and how we can design spaces that not only respond to these changes but also champion sustainability and the circular economy.
The hospitality industry is on the brink of transformation, and I’m here to explore what’s next. How can we create spaces that are not just beautiful but also sustainable and adaptable to the needs of tomorrow’s travelers? How does the circular economy influence our design choices, and how can we integrate these principles into every project?
Join me on this journey as we delve into the opportunities and challenges that are redefining hospitality.

Few weeks ago Anna Bates and @mygarybates@makemake.nyc with a great pleasure delivered the lecture “Inception" at Pratt Institute School of Architecture. The lecture explored the collective work of MAKE MAKE through the lens of humanity, disruption and social equity.
MAKE MAKE believe that architecture is not just about building structures, but about creating spaces that nurture the human spirit. We challenge the traditional notion of a singular creative force, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and diversity in the design process.
Zuzeum Studio, space at @zuzeum designed by @annvil_ housing the exhibition office and an apartment for creators-in-residence. The two-level-high studio also serves as a gallery showcasing highlights and recent acquisitions from the @zuzanscollection
The studio was created within the existing structure of the art centre in order to make effective use of the old factory building that has been used for cultural activities since the 1990s.

Hello from Joshua Tree National Park!
Crafted over millions of years by torrential rain, battering wind, and extreme temperatures, Joshua Tree National Park stretches over nearly 800,000 acres of rugged terrain. These landscapes, which can seem deceptively barren, are home to several ecosystems. Despite the harsh conditions, Joshua Tree teems with plant and animal life that has adapted and thrived in the area’s fierce climate. @joshu_tree
