Athlete Anna DeMonte’s passion for mountain sports began in the most unlikely of places: the swimming pool. Years of competitive training taught her the importance of precision, focus, and honed technique, but after four gruelling years of college swimming and Olympic trials, burnout hit hard. Trading the flat Midwest for the towering Rockies, Anna found freedom in climbing and skiing and fully immersed herself in the mountains. This episode of Team Mountain People follows Anna as she prepares for an ambitious FKT attempt while grappling with work pressures, family expectations, and questions of identity. Her journey reveals that success in the mountains is more complicated than fitness and physical preparation alone. WELL WELL WELL. My only project of the winter/spring season was to attempt the FKT on Denali. I ended the season with a torn ACL & meniscus and a dramatic helicopter ride out of 14 camp. The good: I was in the best shape of my life. We landed on the glacier (7,200 ft) on May 21st and by the 25th had made it up to Denali Pass (18,200 ft) quite comfortably. I finally felt like id be able to put down a real effort in good form. Our team of rodents (@jackkuenzle and @max.kilcoyne ) was the best, and I couldn’t think of anyone else I’d have more fun with up there. I also can’t thank @rab.equipment.na enough for supporting our entire team on this trip. Rab has consistently supported my goals, and we would never have been able to make this trip happen without them. The bad: The trip was probably doomed long before we stepped on the glacier. I work full time and only had 3 weeks off. That stress inevitably wore off on the whole team. I was constantly anxious about getting a weather window and felt a heavy weight on the trip with Denali being my only real objective of the year. And yet, even if I hadn’t torn my ACL, the window I needed came after I had to be back at work anyway. I’ll never try and push something like this into a PTO time crunch again. On May 29, Jack and I went to scout the Orient, thinking it might be faster than Rescue Gully. We bailed before the top, and on the descent with flat light, variable snow, and worsening weather, I felt and heard the snap in my knee. I knew right away it was my ACL. With 2,500 ft left to camp, we had no choice but to ski down. I eventually tried to make a turn which ended up being excruciating and probably tore my meniscus in the process. There’s a lot more to say. I’m lucky it was just my knee. Surgery went well and recovery is going faster than expected (but not nearly as fast as I’d like haha). I realize that while Mont Blanc last year was really exciting, I never felt like I was in my best shape for it and I felt a looming pressure over my head to put something together that was in my best form. Is this the end of Denali? Probably not. But first I’d like to watch my now non-existent right quad regain its strength.

When @rab.equipment.na invited us to Norway to experience the raw beauty of winter and hear firsthand how it shapes those who embrace it, we couldn’t say no. My first trip to Norway šŸ‡³šŸ‡“ earlier in February was a week of skiing at @nes.gard with @rab.nordic . The week brought together people from all over the world, and I feel lucky to have made so many new friends ski touring, cold plunging, and sharing meals together in such a unique place. Thank you especially to @rab.equipment and @bobato808 for including me! 🫶⁣ ⁣ From there, I immediately flew to Milan šŸ‡®šŸ‡¹ with my three 50lb+ checked bags (two of which were just ski gear, one was just work clothes) for a week of work meetings with my coworkers @trooptravel . This week also made me feel grateful to work at such a great company with people I really enjoy. šŸ‘©šŸ¼ā€šŸ’»šŸ“ˆā£ ⁣ The contrast was stark though, going from skiing every day in Norway to back-to-back meetings for a week. Sometimes, it feels like I live two separate lives, split between my work career and my goals in the mountains. ⁣ ⁣ Balancing the two isn’t easy. I recently chatted with @snowbrains about this and Miles asked me what (if anything) is sacrificed managing both. Truth is, I’ve been slower to respond to friends/family, missed social events at home, had more random colds 🤧 that linger around, and generally feel like I’m always apologizing for my lack of time. I’m getting better at managing this, but it’s a constant process that I don’t think will ever be completely figured out. ⁣ ⁣ Over in Chamonix šŸ‡«šŸ‡· skiing for now, really great to be back here, and I’m looking forward to seeing how the spring plays out!! ā¤ļø

Setting the record: an FKT on Mont Blanc. On 5th June 2024, Rab athlete Anna DeMonte (@anna.demonster ) set the women’s ski FKT on Mont Blanc, with a time of 7 hours 29 minutes. Anna tested her every alpine skill to the limit, as she crossed glaciers, passed under seracs, and skinned frozen ascents. Yet a slipped edge and 100ft fall almost cost her everything. Moving solo and carrying all her own kit, Anna hoped to contribute to the history of women on this iconic mountain. Watch the full film on YouTube. Live now: The fastest woman to ski Mont Blanc. On 5th June 2024, Rab athlete Anna DeMonte (@anna.demonster ) set the women’s ski FKT on Mont Blanc with a time of 7 hours 29 minutes. Commanding a comprehensive, technical alpine skillset to navigate unfavourable conditions, Anna completed this challenge solo, carrying all her own gear from start to finish. Anna’s time came within four minutes of the overall women’s FKT set by Hillary Gerardi, despite a costly 100-foot fall on the icy skin up. Full film live on YouTube.
