Yesterday was like a dream come true! Thank you @synthiasalomon and @nyackschools for adding @shallowwatersbook to the curriculum for @apafricanamericanstudies_nhs 🙌🏾 This was the original intention for my book, I wanted young adults to learn about this era in history without feeling powerless and defeated. Michael B. Jordan just won an Oscar for playing an Orisha… AND Ryan Coogler won an Oscar for writing about them! I woke up this morning and saw @thequeenpo reaction to the win, and it hit me. The twin characters Smoke and Stack draw inspiration from the Yoruba Orisha Ibeji — the sacred twins who represent divine duality, balance, and prosperity. In Yoruba tradition, twins are believed to share one soul, and their births are considered a powerful blessing. Michael B. Jordan’s middle name Bakari was given to him by a Babalawo, who predicted he would be great. And director Ryan Coogler has spoken in interviews about the spiritual inspiration of the Ibeji behind the characters. What’s beautiful to me is that this same sacred twin energy appears in my novel The Wind on Her Tongue, part of my Daughter of Three Waters trilogy. Throughout the story, the Ibeji appear through twin pairs like Collette & Cosette and Marie & Ellen — reflecting the spiritual theme of duality and shared destiny. In Yoruba mythology, Oya, the Orisha of wind and transformation, was granted living children and gave birth to several sets of twins.
