I have literally tried to do this very thing for like the past 6 years. Just make a simple display of my room. The problem is I start with a “low poly” mindset, and anyone who knows low poly knows that this is not that. I can never keep it simple. Though unlike other times, I made it a point to see this through. All in all this is like a week of nights worth of work, which I am pretty satisfied with. Trying to just build the reps of actually completing projects instead of overthinking everything. Yeah there is still a ton I would change here but like I've been saying: gotta let go. On to the next!

My wonderful girlfriend Sara told me that my last render did not show off the handiwork I did on the boat enough so I made some beauty shots to show some of the detail on this bad boy. Definitely much faster to get a decent result than usual so pretty happy with how these turned out.
I included the original art this was based on (I totally forgot the little fish on the hull which I feel is a major whiff) by @shanehuntcreative They’re a great artist, totally worth checking out, I recognize that my rendition takes away a ton of the character that was imbued into the original, but I was more focused on technique and quality over stylization. We will get there. Also shoutout to the reddit user who posted that this was a school assignment as it became my personal challenge to see how I could do.

Something a little different than my usual. This took me an absurd amount of time. Not hours necessarily but I started this over a year ago when I saw someone post about a school project they had. They had to take concept art of this fishing boat (next post) and make it in Maya. I thought “Hey I can do that”.
I was met with so many ‘firsts’ on this project that instead of exciting me, they got in my head and stalled progress for ages. Anytime I found that I didn’t know how to do something I usually just stepped away for awhile. Every single time I inevitably came back, I found the solutions I needed were never that difficult to come by.
I’m really happy with how this came out and I hope I can use this as a lesson that even though I don’t know how to do things I can usually find a way to make it happen.

This one goes out to my haters who said I could never do it. Though I think the only person saying that was me to myself…
This was done completely on my laptop which is huge because I felt like I’ve become super reliant on my at home setup. Also maybe I have a thing for jumps? Like my last last post, I ripped this one with no reference and am pretty happy with how it was coming along. But I have a rule that I have to post every Sunday so time to put this one out there and move on.
I hope to make more inspired things moving forward. I made a list of things I think are cool and I want to lean into that more rather than just animating just to do it.

Almost a year in the making. Well, kind of. I can’t remember the exact date but I started this shot almost or even over a year ago. It has been on my to-do list to finish this for so long now that I think I have spent more time thinking about it than actually animating it.
This week, I have challenged myself to animate every single day, going forward, forever. Whether it’s my full setup at home or on a napkin at the beach I truly believe if I wanted to, I would. This is also going hand in hand with posting something every Sunday, at least for the next couple months. I wanted to start by putting this shot out there wherever it got by the end of the week. I am so burdened by the idea of my shots needing to be perfect that I end up not working on them at all, so with this post I am officially free of this burden and can mentally move on to something new.
Animation Mentor’s student showcase is coming up and this qualifies! So I may work on this a little more, but at I am at least getting the instagram post up!

Though this animation is relatively simple, it marks a pretty big step for me in my animation journey. This is my first animation done fully with no reference! I know that’s technically not good practice, but I’ve always had trouble understanding how to bridge the gaps in longer sequences when you don’t have perfect reference. This was a little challenge for myself to see if I could picture something in my head (using all that I’ve learned from previous, similar pieces) and bring it to life.
It’s not fully complete, but I think I successfully hit the marks I was hoping to for this little practice. Also spins can be hard so I wanted to challenge myself with that.

This week I wanted to take a look at animating for games. I came across a super sweet combo by Jason Hendrich on Twitter (X?) and wanted to break down what made it so damn good. I did a study of his work and found just how little I know. Animating for games is crazy. The timing and snappiness of the movements is a whole other beast compared to what I am used to.
I’m hoping to dive more into Unreal sooner rather than later, and I can hopefully do so with some original animations.

Who do I think I am jumping IP’s and taking advantage of the Deadpool hype?!? Not sure tbh.
This month’s @anim_challenge over at @agora.community is Deadpool! They supplied another sweet rig, so the Ahsoka animations are officially on pause until the end of this month. This is NOT my official submission. I made this little animation to get familiar with the rig, and got just a little carried away with layout and lighting lol.
Something I’m realizing is the importance of playing with different rigs. There are a ton of features I got very used to with the animation mentor rigs, and I hit some real roadblocks when they aren’t found in others. It really forces me to get creative and work within the confines of a rig that hasn’t been modified and perfected over more than a decade…

Spent the week focusing on a walk cycle. I wanted to see how comfortable I felt making this after getting more practice in and I can confidently say I am feeling better! I was pretty quickly able to get this into a place that I liked, and spent quite a bit of time “polishing” it up. There’s much more I could keep toying around with, but the beauty of this project is that I just have to move on.

First of the new style of One Shot Wednesdays!
I saw this little moment in an instagram reel the other day and wanted to animate it.
Spent about an hour every day making this (and some), and here’s where I’ve landed. It’s much nicer to actually post something that I feel I’ve made decent progress on. Though I could spend countless more hours touching this up, it’s sort of nice to be forced to just move on to something new.
Once I get into the groove of making these I’ll have to find a way to practice polish, as I always seem to avoid getting in some good reps doing that…
