On April 26, we hosted a free pet pantry and supply distribution in the Bronx alongside @bronxdoghaven @votersforanimalrights @bronxcommunitycats @everylastonerescue —and the response was overwhelming. With over 440 families in attendance, the need was undeniable. Across New York City, more and more families are facing an impossible choice: feed themselves or feed their pets. Pet pantries are helping close that gap, serving as a critical safety net by providing free food and supplies through trusted, community-based networks. These programs don’t just offer relief at the moment, they stabilize households, protect the human-animal bond, and prevent pets from entering an already overwhelmed shelter system. The reality is that most pet surrenders today are not about a lack of love, they’re about a lack of access to resources. Something as simple as pet food can be the difference between a family staying together or being forced apart. Barking. Jumping. Pulling. Chewing. Mouthing. Digging. These aren’t “bad” behaviors. They’re dog behaviors. Dogs bark because they have something to communicate. They jump because they’re excited. They pull because moving forward is rewarding. They chew because it relieves stress. But in a shelter environment, normal behaviors can become amplified. A dog who barks occasionally at home may bark nonstop in a kennel surrounded by stress and noise. A dog who loves people may jump wildly because human interaction is scarce. A dog who chews to self-soothe may fixate on anything available when anxiety is high. The reality is that shelters are incredibly challenging environments for dogs. Limited freedom, unfamiliar routines, chronic stress, and lack of choice can dramatically impact behavior. The question is: are we seeing who the dog truly is, or who they become in survival mode? This doesn’t mean real behavior challenges should be ignored. Safety matters. But it does mean we should be thoughtful about assigning permanent labels based on a dog’s hardest days. With enrichment, routine, decompression, and support, dogs often show us an entirely different side of themselves.
