We headed to #Hawaiʻi with Letitia Wright and @prada Sea Beyonder and @natgeo Explorer, Titouan Bernicot, to learn about the loko iʻa - ancient Hawaiian aquaculture systems that are making a comeback and even providing a sustainable model for aquaculture fisheries around the world. In November, we headed to Japan's #IzuPeninsula in search of underwater adventures with #BenedictCumberbatch and @Prada Sea Beyonder and @NationalGeographic Explorer, Elisabetta Zavoli, before meeting a group of young ocean explorers inspired by beloved ocean advocate Sakana-kun aka 'Fish Guy'. Prada's Sea Beyond partnership with @UNESCO empowers young people around the world to connect with the ocean, not just in classrooms, but through direct contact with coastal and marine ecosystems. Greenland is in the eye of a geopolitical storm right now. All the talk is about control and ownership and territory. Never mind that Inuit people have lived on this island for 4000 years. During our four years making Life on the Edge, the word Sila came up a lot. It’s a beautiful word, redolent with meaning. It can describe consciousness, the weather, spirit, the universe. That which animates. It expresses the connection between our inner state and the external environment. The insight that we are not apart from nature, but a part of it. Perhaps this wisdom comes from experiencing nature at her most raw and elemental for countless generations. In that context, today’s geopolitics plays out like the petulant games of children. For National Geographic Photographer Kiliii Yüyan, joining in is the starting point for his work and maybe a reason for it too.
