Anieya Cauthen, I got a lot to be mad about @anicauthen ’s ongoing project, i got a lot to be mad about, explores photography as a process that expands beyond the frame, embracing interdisciplinarity as both method and meaning. Her process includes creating what she calls “false analogs,” combining photographs, screen recordings, prose, scanned objects and image-objects to explore how different surfaces hold emotional and sensory charge. viñales, cuba! everything really is a circle! it started with exploring a space i grew up in and have had to watch change (unfortunately and for the worst) as time goes on (2016-2017) and then photographing spaces i don’t have access to as a mediator between fantasy and reality since i never grew up in a formal home (y’know… with a basement and attic…) [2018-2019] and was facing some strange feelings that i couldn’t really put language to until now. i was experiencing grief (i mean, i still am. every day). i felt like my understanding of home (and what a home should/could look like) had been torn away from me (and it had). the house or the home (as a subject) is something i’ll always subconciously gravitate towards and i think i’m finally okay with that (and i think it’s a natural forced engagement since i’m aging and am beginning to navigate what i want a home to look like for myself). i think i challenged myself to finally push this a bit further and rather than thinking about the relationship the people [or i] have with the space i instead forced myself (non-derogatory) to finally (because everything is nuanced, sigh) think about the relationship the land has with the space and how the land surrounding it impacts it [the space] and the people within them. enough yapping for now though. i think i might consider the substack thing again. happy lolla eve to those who celebrate (this is a weird place to say that………..) cuba 2/?

in january, i went to cuba with @womenphototours . i’ve held off on sharing photos because [per usual ahaha this is a horrible habit and has a lot to do with perfectionism] i did not develop the film that i have which means more photos will [hopefully] be shared as time goes on. i’m attempting to get into the habit of sharing more work, even if i feel weird about it. i looked at the digitals for the first time in april and because i’m extremely hard on myself (and was stressed out trying to finish school) i did not look at them again until today. anyway, enough about why some of the pictures won’t exist for another year. here’s @_rizandra_ ’s beautiful home. will be sharing a few more images throughout the week maybe probably possibly if i don’t forget.

hello pals. i’ve been trying to make a more official celebratory graduation post but i haven’t been able to get my grad photos developed (and then the dog kinda destroyed the rolls but the main point is they haven’t been developed) and joseph hasn’t sent me our pictures (everyone boo @josephobanubi ) so here i am with a dump of things. but yeah, i’m a master or whatever.

if you came to the opening yesterday, thank you so much. i haven’t shown work in a very long time and was extremely nervous of the reception it’d receive as i haven’t had much critique in the past year (i had to remove myself from a space i was being ostracized from. i’m still partially in that space until may 17th, unfortunately). very special thanks to @0riana0 , @rachiffein , dr. @lovenloops , and @nekitathegawd for being people i could bounce ideas off of and receive feedback from, even if we were just shooting the shit. @andreamirosramirez , dr. @muva.princess , @tellyourmoms , and vince staples (lmfao) for not only informing some of the work but becoming apart of it. thank you for being funny and (dare i say) provocative and making the world around us belly laugh (or, as one of my favorite professors told me, nearly make a white woman jump out of her skin). you all have wonderful brains in those skulls and i’m happy to know ya! i have much gratitude to those who support my work. seriously, thank you for viewing, laughing, crying, whatever! according to @williamhohe and @leemontine i’m an “art+design legend”. having lowkey legend status is so satisfying, ahaha. i implore you, if you’re in or around the cu (champaign-urbana) area to drop by the krannert art museum and check it out. sit with it, write/talk about it (i love hearing y’alls thoughts even though y’all make me nervous), laugh with it. be in and around it. please step on the yellow roses (yes, you’re allowed to step on them) and then head over to of/by/for the screens by the lovely/amazing/wonderful/one of the most talented visual artists i’m happy to know and be in community with, @josephobanubi . i got a lot to be mad about, a culmination of the constants that are referred to as grief and change and the dance that they do, is on view at the krannert art museum until april 26th. p.s. shout out to the extremely talented @lipssooonasty for crafting this lovely jacket. many people inquired and i don’t remember who i said i’d send their ig to.
