While those four details could be describing a day of documenting snowboarding in 2025, this was 1998. The foot had been freed from the bindings on a number of occasions before this, but maybe not outside of a halfpipe or quarterpipe, and never for a plant on an object. While not for everyone—then and even now—there was a sizable contingency of riders pursuing anything and everything that paid homage to skateboarding. Some of it translated, some didn’t. In the years since, there have been many who have cracked the code on bringing a skateboarding aesthetic to the mountain, but at that time, few did it better than Jason Brown. My first year shooting digital, but I didn’t fully trust it yet so I brought the film camera along too. My favorite shot from that day was of Mikey on film. (I’ll save that for another post once I scan it. I wouldn’t advise holding your breath waiting for that one). This may or may not be the day Etienne landed a trick and rode up to the crew at the bottom proclaiming “Last part for the Gilby!”
