As seen in our latest issue October 2025 Issue 5.1 โ Back In My Day | Jason Brown, Brighton UT, 1998 p: Andy Wright
โFoot plants, Burton step-in bindings, Brighton, shooting film. While those four details could be describing a day of documenting snowboarding in 2025, this was 1998. The foot had been freed from the bindings on a number of occasions before this, but maybe not outside of a halfpipe or quarterpipe, and never for a plant on an object. While not for everyoneโthen and even nowโthere was a sizable contingency of riders pursuing anything and everything that paid homage to skateboarding. Some of it translated, some didnโt. In the years since, there have been many who have cracked the code on bringing a skateboarding aesthetic to the mountain, but at that time, few did it better than Jason Brown. His mark on snowboarding was great, and much more far-reaching than a bag of tricks, but this moment served as inspiration for more than a few notable riders from the generation to follow.โ
