A VISUAL DIALOGUE : TOKYO
“japanese spirit with urban sophistication” is the cultural layer that acknowledges a profound sense of place. We distilled the japanese spirit into its purest forms: the ritual of the authentic house, the beauty of natural materials, and the appreciation for shadow and light. then we reinterpreted these through a contemporary architectural lens. this resonates with tokyo because the city itself is a master of juxtaposition - ancient temples nestled between skyscrapers. the result feels authentically of its place, yet utterly modern.’ says andre fu.

A MODERN TOKYO TEITAKU
‘marunouchi possesses a fascinating duality. by day, it’s the pulsating heart of japanese commerce; by night, it transforms into a tranquil, almost contemplative district. our narrative sought to capture this dichotomy—the energy and the calm.’ says andre fu.

Our Wallpaper* Design Award for Best New Opening 2026 goes to @capellataipei at @capellahotels designed by @andrefustudio , a long-overdue and much-needed addition to the Taiwanese capital’s limited luxury hotel scene.
Set next to the banyan tree-shaded Dunhua North Road, Capella Taipei exudes the confidence of a landmark. The 86-room property occupies several floors of a new glass tower by Mori Building Group, marking the city’s first true luxury hotel debut in a decade. In a capital that blends high ambition with day-to-day practicality, the opening feels well timed.
The interiors are shaped around the idea of a ‘modern mansion’. Monumental bronze doors open onto a marble vestibule lined with tapestries, a striking archway and the all-day dining restaurant Plume. A spiral staircase with a sweeping hardwood handrail curls around Joel Escalona’s sculptural piece Quiet Dynamics, setting the tone for the journey through the hotel.
Rooms begin at a generous 48 sq m, with blond-wood walls, hand-painted silk panels, floor-to-ceiling windows and marble bathrooms. The pool terrace suites offer vast private decks with plunge pools, jacuzzis and sunbeds, alongside outdoor dining areas. A 30m-long pool is framed by bougainvillaea, while the spa is attuned to lunar rhythms.

VERDANT INSPIRES
the bedroom’s heart was drawn from dappled, sunlit lanes, where grand old boughs, in emerald, gold, and russet stain, arched like a vaulted nave in shanghai’s whispered rain.
the villa’s heritage now holds a living glade,
where walls remember shadows that the willows made,
and dawn repeats the peace of that tree-lined parade.
