A scene of resistance encompasses a force that acts to slow down, stop or invert the progress of something. Resistance can be seen in various forms and contexts, from the politics of resistance as emancipation, to the physics of resistance as a property of materials. For example, factors like material composition, length, cross-sectional area, and temperature can affect the resistance of an electrical conductor, while in the assembly of bodies in protest the affective forces of particular histories, cultures and identities are made present. Resistance incites a process of transformation that challenges the totalitarianism behind the idea of the “original” and “truth,” as Walter Benjamin discussed. The importance of resistance as a tool for emancipating from oppressive systems is emphasized by Édouard Glissant in connection to opacity as a theory and a practice that counteracts homogenization.
