NERDSTALGIA opens THIS Saturday February 10th @thinkspace_art My parents didn’t really want us to play video games as a kid but my brother got a game boy for Christmas (we had to share) and we played Pokémon yellow together. We couldn’t figure out how to switch our first Pokémon until halfway through the game so we had a level 45 pikachu that wouldn’t listen to us. 😂😬 Eventually we each got our own game, I got blue and he got red. We could still only play 30 minutes a day, even in the summer and we couldn’t trade because we only had 1 game boy. We spent time with my cousin (who wasn’t allowed to play at all because his mom was super Christian) walking around their neighborhood and pretending to find Pokémon. We drew Pokémon and even made up our own crosses (Rapidash should have a Pegasus version that flies is all I’m saying). For whatever reason, Pokémon remains my only hobby. It’s the only thing that I’ve kept an obsession with besides art and the only thing I do purely for fun. I had so much fun creating this piece and I’m so grateful to be in this show with so many amazing artists… and yes the lighting and mushrooms glow in the dark. This piece has 22 Pokémon and 6 special items from the Pokémon world in it. Truly nothing makes me angrier than people painting on glass with acrylic or oil paint and calling it “glass painting.” Why? Because you’re one humid day away from that whole thing being destroyed. IT IS NOT ARCHIVAL. Vitreous glass paint is a type of paint that is made of small glass particles that fuse to the surface of the glass. In 1000+ years, the only things that have changed in this process are that we have electricity for kilns and we no longer use child labor in window construction… both positive changes, I’d say. I love being a part of this ancient tradition and I love using techniques typically reserved for Jesus to paint cute little animals floating in the sky.
