It’s the last few days to see “A Garden of Promise and Dissent” @thealdrich . Contributing to this exhibition was a milestone for me in several ways. This was my first outdoor sculpture and I’m proud to say it persevered through the elements for all 18 months. Here are some peak blooms from last summer.

I’ve always been interested in how sculpture can respond to its environment. Having this piece installed in @thealdrich sculpture garden gave me a chance to consider how my work could have another mode of existence at night. For years I’ve used glazes containing rare earth elements for their ability to change color in response to light but I recently learned Europium oxide has phosphorescent properties allowing it to absorb UV light during the day and slowly release it at night. Obelisk (Anew) is on view through April 12th and if you feel inclined to visit after hours you’ll find it glowing across the garden. :: Obelisk (Anew), 2024. cremated morning glory, rare earth elements, ceramic, resin, steel, acrylic, maple.

Not my new work, just something I love living with. A burnout cast of a rose from my mom’s garden with a vitrine designed and built with my dad.

Anders Hamilton’s Obelisk (Anew), 2024, preserves the delicate form of a morning glory through his “cremation” process, transforming the ephemeral bloom into a lasting monument. Installed in the Sculpture Garden and now covered in living morning glories, the work creates a powerful sense of return and renewal—nature reclaiming and continuing its own cycle. Hamilton’s obelisk reflects on life, death, and regeneration, capturing both the fragility and resilience of the natural world. @andershamilton_ @amy_smithstewart
