For this special conversation, join artist Alan Chin @alanchinart and curator Sophia Quach McCabe, Ph.D. @sqm_arthistorian as they discuss the new body of work presented in “Alan Chin: Palimpsests”. Chin received his BFA in Ceramics and Painting from California College of the Arts in 2011, with additional study at Academie Minerva in the Netherlands. He has exhibited internationally, including at the Berkeley Art Museum, The Kaneko, ReschĂ© AteliĂ©r in Paris, the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, and represented the United States at the 2017 International Sculpture Biennale in Wuhan, China. Alan Chin’s @alanchinart practice is deeply rooted in his respect and care for the natural world, especially bonsai. “Alan Chin: Palimpsests” marks the debut of Chin’s monumental ceramic bonsai and “Palimpsests of Nature” series, a wonderland of imagined nature in greens, pinks, blues, and blacks. Chin’s interest in nature includes how its patterns serve as records of time, exemplified in the circular growth rings of trees—transformed by Chin’s hands into spiral pinch pot ceramics such as “Blue Ridge” (2023)—and how their kinetic structures adapt to different environments and speak to an ongoing story of survival, as offered by the artist’s tenmoku-glazed reimagined bonsai sculpture “Ahu” (2025). AMPHI Gallery is pleased to present “The First Garden”, a solo exhibition of new works by Paulin Paris @paulinparisstudio . Born in Paris and based in California since 2000, Paulin Paris’s practice is deeply informed by philosophy, travel, and sustained encounters with nature. Grounded in Paris’s guiding philosophy, “Art is Life,” the exhibition brings together painting, pattern, and surface to create a world that is meant not only to be viewed, but inhabited. Central to the exhibition is Paris’s ongoing “Tapis de feuilles” series—large-scale works inspired by the forest floor, where scattered leaves form rhythmic, meditative fields of color. At first glance, these paintings read as lush abstractions or decorative carpets; with time, small faces emerge from the foliage, subtly returning the viewer’s gaze. As Paris notes, “Looking at the leaves, you realize they are looking back at you.” The works invite reflection on consciousness, presence, and our reciprocal relationship with the natural world, while blurring boundaries between fine art and interior surface. The exhibition is curated by Sabine Paris @sabinepitbull , the artist’s daughter, who holds a degree in Art History from Bard College and has grown up with a deep, firsthand understanding of Paulin Paris’s work and evolving practice. Through its exploration of nature as both origin and environment, “The First Garden” offers an immersive, poetic vision in which art and life are inseparable, and the natural world is both refuge and interlocutor. What does it mean to inherit an art world—and an inner world? In her review of “A Boat Made of Dreams” at AMPHI Gallery, Lisa Locascio Nighthawk follows a thread of Los Angeles art lineage across generations, where dream-recording becomes ritual and the unknown is treated with reverence. As Nighthawk writes, if some works feel like “glimpses” of the unknown, others read like a “lifestream from within” it—pointing to mystery as something generative and sustaining, a deep well of inspiration that continues to course through Los Angeles artists. Ultimately, the exhibition celebrates the unknown, insisting it be handled with care. Images: 1.
