Jay's vinyl of the day: @deftones Around The Fur Released October 28th, 1997 You always remember the first song that blew out a speaker. In my case? It was bringing electric death to a Kenwood speaker in my bedroom via "My Own Summer". It's crazy to think about all of the memories attached to this album for me. Jay's vinyl of the day: @weezer Pinkerton Released September 24th, 1996 I actually got this on CD on October 8th of 1996, on my 14th birthday. I was so excited that there was a follow-up to the Blue Album. Incidentally, I was also well and truly sick, having been throwing up that entire day. What an awful way to spend a birthday, but I had Pinkerton to make up for it. To this day, I believe this is a tragically underappreciated album. "The Good Life" and "Butterfly" remain some of my favorite tunes ever. And where did I pick this up? Unsurprisingly, @squatchden records! Jay's vinyl of the day: @runthejewels RTJ4 Released June 3rd, 2020 Back when I was hosting radio shows on the regular, I would do daily countdown posts for the big @dannywimmerpresents festivals, including @aftershockfestival . When digging through the lineup to pick an artist of the day, I came across one I wasn't familiar with. Run The Jewels. I've been a fan ever since. I had at least known @killermike since the @outkast days, but @thereallyrealelp was a new discovery for me. I've loved all of the albums, but RTJ4 struck a bigger chord with me. In the social and political climate, it was the right music at the right time. It makes you feel some kinda way, whether good, bad, angry, sad, and everything in between. And then one day, I came across the tune, "Excuse Me". I was hooked from day one, only to fall in love more with the music after having the pleasure of interviewing AJ Channer twice over the intervening years. Jay's vinyl of the day: @amigothedevil Everything Is Fine Released October 19th, 2018 I blame my unrequited love for Amigo on my old friend, @megan_beck1111 . She kept posting about... some folk artist? But then, I listened. Again and again. I couldn't help but be taken by the mood and charm. And once the song "Cocaine and Abel" was released, I couldn't think of a song in my life that I just felt seen. I love ATD to such a degree that I'm tattooed prominently with the logo. Let's be real. Jay's vinyl of the day: @kingsxofficial Tape Head Released October 20th, 1998 Let's talk about King's X for a minute. I grew up on King's X. I never could wrap my head around how few people had heard of them. Just a ridiculously great trio, and a tragically underrated one at that. Tape Head was their 7th studio album, still following the change in sound that started with Dogman two albums previously. @dugpinnick is, to this day, one of my favorite vocalists of all time, with Ty being no slouch either, on top of his intoxicatingly smooth riffs. If you've not heard of King's X, do yourself a favor and dive into their rich 13 album discography, recently bolstered last year with "Three Sides of One" I know. You want more vinyl. And so do I. Jay's vinyl of the day: @dillingerescapeplan Irony is a Dead Scene ft/ @officialmikepatton Released August 27th, 2002 This album is an absolute gem of you've not heard it. The story goes, DEP's original vocalist, @dminakakis , had departed the band after they had released "Calculating Infinity", an album of which Mike Patton absolutely adored. So, a plan was made to make the next album with Mike heading up the vox. Though "ironically", @gregpuciato had already been touring with them by the time the album had been tracked. I regret immensely that I missed this album live on the final farewell show in New York. Sufficed to say, the chaos of Dillinger and Mike Patton mesh well. Looking to bolster your vinyl horde?
