Selections from “No Man’s Land” featured in Issue 17.
Paying homage to the early 1980s and the history behind the Ghanaian sacks known as “Ghana Must Go” bags, the series reflects on the 1983 expulsion of more than two million Ghanaians from Nigeria. What began as a practical way to carry belongings during one of West Africa’s largest migration crises has since become a powerful cultural symbol.
Once tied to displacement and survival, the bag’s bold checkered pattern now appears across fashion, art, and street culture, transforming a marker of exile into a statement of identity and resilience.
