The AGG is excited to have Virginia speaking at our 20th Anniversary conference!
Stained glass was one of the most important aspects of the resurgence of nationalism in Ireland at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1903, Christopher Whall, a pioneer in the English Arts & Crafts movement, sent over his chief assistant, Alfred Ernest Child, to work with the painter Sarah Purser to establish An Túr Gloine (Tower of Glass). Almost all significant Irish artists in stained glass were at some time associated with the movement. Honan Chapel, University College, Cork, shows windows between 1915 and 1917 by artists of An Túr Gloine, primarily Harry Clarke and Ernest Child. In the U.S., the Newton Country Day School, Newton, MA, shows a sophisticated collection of Irish windows by Michael Healy, Alfred Earnest Child, Catherine (Kitty) A. O’Brien, Kathleen Quigley, and Ethel Rhind. Artists kept their own approaches, supported by the encouragement of the collective to favor linear abstraction over three-dimension pictorialism. The AGG will lead a tour of Harry Clark’s windows in St. Vincent de Paul R.C. Church, Bayonne, New Jersey, commissioned in the late 1920s.
You can join us for the conference and the awesome bus tours we have lined up! Early bird registration ends May 22, so go to the link in our bio to register today!

We are getting excited about our speakers at the AGG 20th anniversary conference!
“Remembered Light” is a collection of twenty five art pieces created by thirteen artists using stained glass shards collected by late Frederick McDonald in various bombed sites in WW2. Each piece includes a text transcript from the chaplain‘s memory of the specific location and events related to it.
The unaltered glass fragments and the narratives have been transcended by the artists to convey the idea of being a witness of the era one experiences leading to the universal longing for Peace.
Most of the pieces combine various glass techniques such as: Leaded glass, glass painting, enameling, sandblasting, fusing, slumping, silkscreen and lampworking. Other media such as ceramic, wood, acetate and Plexiglas have been used. The pieces are of various shapes and dimensions. The collection is displayed as a chronological journey and finds its harmony in the steel easel—like frames and pedestals custom-made for each artwork.
The exhibition also includes a 5-minute introduction video, and graphics explaining The Chaplain McDonald’s journey and a booklet of his stories, a lit display case with remaining glass shards and various archives. A catalog has been printed in 3000 copies.
Armelle Le Roux, owner of Atelier Le Roux is the artistic director, lead artist, and curator of “Remembered Light.” The project is an on-going, travelling exhibition since 2008—and will find its permanent home at the Presidio in San Francisco.
Register for our conference today! Early-bird registration ends May 22nd. Check the link in our bio to register.
Jaclyn here, back for my final takeover post. Today I want to focus on what a transformative experience my session at Pilchuck Glass School was as a whole.
Not only did I get to access a curriculum of specialized skills from masters of their craft that I could take back to my studio and apply directly to my stained glass work, but I got to meet and learn from an incredible group of artists from all over the world in an environment made for fostering the glass craft across a wide range of disciplines. It was a dream come true, and something that wouldn’t have been possible for me without the AGG scholarship.
This experience was also unique in that Pilchuck encourages extracurricular experimentation and crossover learning, so I got so much more out of my session than I ever expected to. Outside of class time I attended many great demos and knowledge sharing sessions from world class glass artists, and got to try my hand at other equipment and techniques I didn’t expect to work with when I first arrived. I’ll be forever grateful for the support from the American Glass Guild for helping make this experience accessible. Thanks for following along! #agg #stainedglassartist #artglass #glassartist #glassart #aggscholarship
Jaclyn (@assemblyglassworks ) again, here with more about my time at Pilchuck Glass School last summer.
The class I took was titled “Pintura Sobre Vidrio (Painting on Glass), instructed by the amazing Sofia Villamarin (@sofiavillamaringlass ), and assisted by Alejandro Badillos (@alejandro.badillosvitraux ).
Though the curriculum focused on vitreous paint techniques, we started the 11-day course with a study in tonality and shape through a sandblasted portrait exercise that completely stole my heart (shoutout to my fellow Tiny Tim fans), and then moved into paint application, enamel tile testing, texture exercises, and specific techniques for successful glass painting. It was incredible to get to dig into the materials so thoroughly before applying what we were experiencing into finished works.
Our class spent the remainder of the course working on traditional leaded panel painting and construction, building up layers and depth in painted portraits over the course of several firings, and we were given the freedom to work on additional personal projects that utilized the techniques we were taught. I am especially grateful to Sofia and Alejandro for sharing their years of knowledge and experience with us in such an intimate, personalized setting. #agg #glassartist #aggscholarship #glassart #artglass #stainedglassartist
Hi there! I’m Jaclyn Miller (@assemblyglassworks ), currently living in Arvada, CO. I’ve been working in glass since 2019, primarily in copper foil stained glass, with specific interest in surface manipulation techniques. With the support of the American Glass Guild James C. Whitney Memorial Scholarship, I was fortunate enough to attend my first class at Pilchuck Glass School (@pilchuckglassschool ) last August, and I’m delighted to share that experience with you on the AGG Instagram page over the next few days!
Flashback to 2022 when we had our AGG conference in Corning, New York. AGG conferences are the best! You also make friends with the coolest people! Our silent and live auctions benefit our James Whitney Scholarship Fund. In the end, it all comes back to you! The knowledge you gain, the friendships you make...you can't beat it! Come and join us this August 4-10 for our NYC/NJ conference! Thanks @timcareystudio for sharing this with us!
