Uniquely beautiful traditions rippling through history. UCLA’s Fowler Museum sheds light on the Armenian Tradition of delicate needle lace making “Janyak”
What I enjoyed nearly as much as the laces themselves, was the glass flatted displays which featured the shadows each piece cast across the wall. Truly a marvelous appreciation for the hundreds of hours each lace required!

“LAWMAN: Bass Reeves”, starring David Oyelowo and Lauren E Banks, Premieres one week from today, Nov 5th on Paramount Plus ~ Costume Design by @isismussenden !
Primary Research found in TinTypes and early photographs was a touchstone for this true to life Hero and Historic figure’s mini-series.
After wrap on the show, I lucked into the Boston MFA’s Exhibit “Painted TinTypes” that resonated very closely to our team’s research. Most early 19th Century tintypes were small in size and housed in special decorative cases or elaborately carved frames.

After all the suits, vests, & pants, the large cadre of shirts to build for Jacqui West’s Costume Design was no small task.
“Ernest” & “Hale” needed a vast closet of upscale collared & band-collared built in multiples of 3, 4, and 6’s, as well as more work-A-day options.
The Osage Cast and day players shirts and blouses required a wider range of historically evocative textiles. Fortunately for the Reproduction & Quilting cotton industry, we had more patterned options to choose from. While many of these were sourced from all over the country (and world even), these pieces were predominantly made in OK, so that the fastens, findings and ribbons sang true to the Osage Peoples.

#KillersOfTheFlowerMoon, Costume Designer Jacqueline West worked closely with @julie_Okeefe , Lead Osage Costume Consultant to tell this incredible story properly through Traditional Osage clothing.
On a project of this scope, it is such a joy to be enriched by the history and details, even though it wasn’t my direct work. To barely scratch the surface, here’s a bit on blankets…
1- Movie Screen grab illustrating the variety of blanket types and wrap styles
2- (Reproduction) PENDLETON Striped Blankets overdyed by our Textile Team. An earlier post featured research of Mollie and her sisters in this blanket style.
3- CAPPS blankets where we tried to sublimate copies for BG actors. After we ran tests, we sourced vintage instead.
4- Trade Cloth, a broadcloth weight woolen, conveys meaning through its striped edges; specific Lengths are worn as shawls and wrapped garments. A pared down selection of the most “Period Accurate” examples; In the end, even some of these were eliminated given deeper research and consultation.
5- Research of Mollie Burkhart and Antique Victorian Creme/Red French Paisley Pashimas and Kashmiri Red Paisley Shawls; (it was fun to work with my vintage dealers and add a few to Mollie’s costume closet!)
6- “Chasing Rainbows” by @barryfriedmanindianblankets , a collector, researcher and trusted resource for Key featured Indian Blankets that went onscreen! This book is incredible! (And he wrote a second too!)

As complicated as LeonardoDiCaprio’s character “Ernest” is, one thing reads clear and simple, he does “love that money”! This arc can be seen in the myriad of clothes we built, pulled and purchased for his costumes. Shown here is just a small tasting of the custom-made builds.
This feature required an enormous team of workroom tailors and drapers, Osage and Native American craftspersons, leather and specialty costumers, textiles artists, ager/dyers, costume pullers and buyers, background fitting costumers, onset principal and background costumers to bring this 1920s/1930s Osage “Reign of Terror” to the screen!

#TextileTuesday: For #KillersOfTheFlowerMoon replicating and manufacturing period clothes was essential to fulfilling Jacqui West’s Costume Design Vision. Of the 1,000 plus pieces I oversaw the build of, we made a LOT of workwear. In partnership with @Carhartt , we recreated some of their earliest pieces including Chorecoats, coveralls and pre-dungarees!
(A big win was when i found the exact fabric match of their wide-set pinstriped denim, the fabric they used in making their own replicas 🙌🏻!)

Inspired by my trip to Ecuador, why not try my hand at weaving? The @textileartscenter Weaving Intensive was a great fit to get a bit more hands on.
We used a Four Harness Floor Loom and I kept my colors super simple for the Sampler.
While i’ve worked with manufacturers and artisans to weave/loom brocades and woolens for past projects, this Class brought a great insight into the Why’s and How’s. Plus an even greater gave appreciation for Unique HandMade Textiles! 🧶🧵🪢🧵🧶
