Repost @huckmagazine “Like in many other nations, Japan’s elites placed a strong focus on cultivating the arts throughout its long history. It acted as a way of upholding and enforce a collective nationalist identity that served the ruling class, but artists always found a way to subvert the norms. “Japan has always been a deeply hierarchical, conformist, classist society, but there were always undercurrents pushing against that,” says Parisian film director and producer @amelieravalec , whose documentary feature film Japanese Avant-Garde Pioneers @japanavantgarde premiered in New York in 2025. Now Ravalec returns with Japan Art Revolution: The Japanese Avant-Garde, from Angura to Provoke (@thamesandhudsonusa ), the first comprehensive English language book to trace the post-war explosion of the avant-garde across photography, illustration, graphic design, film, theatre, dance, and street performance. Organised chronologically, Japan Art Revolution showcases visionaries including Daido Moriyama, Provoke, Eikö Hosoe, Noboyushi Araki, Mikayo Ishiuchi, Neo-Dada Organizers and Hi-Red Center into a chronicle of radical counterculture that revolutionised the arts worldwide.”

“𝙄𝙣𝙫𝙤𝙘𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙁𝙡𝙚𝙨𝙝 by Amélie Ravalec is a new photographic project the artist is presenting in her first solo show as a photographer, revealing a deeply sensory and corporeal exploration of the human body through imagery that evokes ritual, intensity and presence. Ravalec, known for her engagement with avant-garde aesthetics and immersive cultural expressions, often blends photography with cinematic and performative sensibilities. Invocations of Flesh participates in this lineage by foregrounding the body as a site of invocation, memory and intensity, inviting viewers to confront how physicality and emotion intersect within contemporary photographic practice.” /photographers/am%C3%A9lie-ravalec

IPFA AWARD 2026 🎉 It’s with great pleasure to share that the 20 winners and the 50 finalists of the very first award of the International Photography Festivals Association (IPFA) have been announced today! After being one of the 20 international jurors, I am happy to announce the artist who I selected and will curate for an international solo exhibition! Proud to work together with the amazing artist Amélie Ravalec, a London-based Parisian film director and photographer, editor and colourist! Amélie is the author and book designer of ‘Japan Art Revolution’, that has been already internationally launched and was present amongst others at Paris Photo, alongside the projection of the film. Her films have been released worldwide with more than 1200 screenings in cinemas, festivals, museums and cultural institutions. Looking forward @amelieravalec And thanks to our festivals association @photographyfestivals for the great support in the realization of this huge project! Very excited to announce my first solo show as a photographer, for my new work 𝑰𝒏𝒗𝒐𝒄𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝑭𝒍𝒆𝒔𝒉. Many thanks to the IPFA Award 2025 and to curator Ioana Cobzaru for selecting and supporting my work! A series of hand-painted photographic prints capturing Butoh dancers Ichihara Akihito of Sankai Juku and Paul Michael Henry, a study of the body as invocation, ritual and erasure. Ichihara Akihito, a spectral presence, ethereal and dissolving, as if called from above, barely tethered to the earth. Paul Michael Henry, a force of gravity and conflict, pulled downwards, raw and visceral, stirred by something primal. Can’t wait for the exhibition! @photographyfestivals @ioana_cobzaru_art @paul.michael.henry @sankaijuku @ak_ichihara #butoh #sankaijuku
