‘A Short History of Orientalism and Type Design’ is my master thesis done @ecalmatd in 2022, exploring the history of the so called ‘oriental’ metal types in Europe.
Going from Napoleon’s extravagant conquests, the Orientalists studies, to the lives and works of individuals such as Arcade Hoang and Ferdinand Theinhardt, this thesis aims at creating an overview of the historical and political reasons behind the development of those metal types for many scripts of the world.

THE•SATURNALIA•THAT•NEVER•ENDED
is the feverish dream of Spartacus, the Thracian gladiator and leader of the slave uprising that shook the Roman Empire between 73 and 71 BC.
As Spartacus is dying, crucified on a wooden cross on the Via Appia, he is taken by visions of a hopeful future where slaves would finally bring the Roman oligarchy system to its knees. With these come the radical change in how these newly free men would write as they appropriate the capitalis monumentalis.
