Antinöpolis and the village of Sheikh Ibada, Minya
I usually spend my birthdays among ruins, and this year was no exception. On November 27th, I set out for the village of Sheikh Ibada, to survey the ancient city of Antinöpolis. It was built c. AD 130 by Roman Emperor Hadrian in honour of his lover Antinous, who is said to have drowned in the nile near where the site is today. By sheer happenstance, me and Antinous also share the same birthday. Naturally, a visit to the site has been on my itinerary for quite some time; and so, film camera in tow, I took a train to Minya, as a sort-of gift to myself. Its not everyday you turn 23, after all.
Yet what I wasn't prepared for was the sheer magic of the place. Entering the village was like stepping foot into a storybook, suspended in time. I only wish I had more roll to fully capture the essence of it all. There is a beauty to rural Egypt, beyond the confines of Cairo. Its a shame we tend to forget, or even look down upon that, no?
