I always look for lyrics that allow room for many meanings. The song then becomes what you need it to be. A place where projecting your own meaning can help you process and learn about yourself if you have the courage to listen. These kinds of songs also allow you to find different meanings at different times of your life, which is very beautiful. They become a companion. They are powerful tools for a dj because they allow everyone to connect in their own way, but with a similar level of depth, which contributes to that feeling of unity that special sets create. My mom was going through the family archives and sent me an old VHS clip. In it I was two years old. We had just been to a circus, and she asked me what my favourite part was. My eyes widen as I turn to her. I slam my juice box down and say, “The drums!!!” I don’t remember this moment to be honest. But that makes it more powerful. That this extreme draw towards rhythm was something I was born with. A gift I was given. Music has always been my guiding light, my teacher, and my purpose. But I’ve learned recently that music is not something I follow, not something separate from me. I am its container, a conduit.
