Pleased to share the web design we created for @alt.material@alt.material is an experimental design collective established in 2018 by Nancy Beka and Ben Edwards of @studio_edwards . They needed a website to deliver the fruition of @alt.material
The website delivers the fruition of alt.material within the digital space through ‘Store’, ‘Designers’ and ‘Exhibitions’. ‘Store’ is the star of our web design as it introduces collectors to the pieces curated by alt.material. Simultaneously, thanks to the ‘Exhibition’ and home page ‘Articles’ sections, the website acts both as a resource and an encompassing archive of the research into materiality and yearly exhibitions curated by the collective.
Our concept included the use of Swiss typography for its accessibility, clarity of vision and intent. An editorial look and feel coupled with modernity and restraint delivers the website’s design an archival capacity and a resource focus.
We intended to make materiality the underpinning concept of the website design. The use of superscripts and abbreviations is a nod to the elemental design of the periodic table. The teal colour, initially reserved for the ‘Store’ component of the website, was amplified to act as a brand colour in the final design.
