Michel left us peacefully a few weeks ago. He was my assistant and my little best friend. I set out on a major life and career change right after we met nine years ago, a few months after my dad died. Michel sat on my lap, draped himself over my wrists, or splayed himself on my desk for every script I ever wrote. He sat on the warm, freshly printed pages of each new draft. He also loved softshell crabs, ear rubs, talking, and being held like a baby. This year, Michel came to New York while I made my first film: he slept next to me every night, sat in on shotlisting and page turns, perched on stored camera equipment, even came to set when we shot at my apartment. I sometimes think he was a little angel my dad sent to guide me from one phase of my life into the next. Michel stayed on with Nick and I for two more weeks after I got home, and then chose his perfect time to go. I will love you forever Michel. You changed my life.
The weekend after the LA fires, I told everyone who would listen that we had to do something for our film community or everyone would pack up and leave. I had no idea the adventure that passionate argument would set me off on – “start an activist movement” was definitely not on my bingo card for 2025. Less than six months later we have a California tax film incentives program with 35% rebate - now among the highest in the country - and a $750m program up from $330m. SO MANY people did the work @sarahadinasmith@4pamala and @stehmo leading the charge of our cohort, plus CA United, the EUC, the MPA, and many more, most of whom have fought for this much longer than us. Now let’s get back to work…where we actually live. #StayinLA is now a forever thing

Sign our petition to bring production back to LA by demanding our lawmakers lift the cap on the film tax credit over the next three years and studios increase their commitment to filming here.
Actors, HODS, writers, producers, directors want to live here and see their families. They don’t want to go to Bulgaria or South Africa or Canada to shoot. Bring below the line jobs back to LA. Incentivize people to stay here and rebuild and support our small businesses.
This city was built on people coming here to make movies. Let’s keep them here. Follow @StayinLA2025 for more updates… and thank you to @hireyoungprofessionals for designing our campaign!!
My first short film THUMB is finally home online at @futureoffilmisfemale ! Excited to share this ghost story on Halloween! 👻 Link in bio 👻
