This Thursday as part of the programming for the exhibition Day, Laine Rettmer and Ali Newhard will discuss their project Fugue, a series of photo-roman single-channel works shown on slide projector. The images featured in Fugue were taken using expired 35mm Kodak Ektachrome color slide film, and made across Utah, Colorado, New York, and Rhode Island. The slides reenact, reference, and fabulate images from the new queer cinema movement of the 1990s, (My Own Private Idaho, Happy Together, Mulholland Drive, and High Art). These films were formative in outlining and visualizing our understandings of queer safety and love, often defining the boundary of what was possible. Through Fugue, we imagine new narratives in the cracks and slippages around these reproductions. The work explores a post-colonial, queer relationship to tropes of “the West” and “Manifest Destiny.” In Fugue, assumptions about travel, expansion, and American exceptionalism are challenged through our subjectivity, access, and feminist critique.

Without vigilance, a story’s origins are forgotten. Rather than mechanically allowing other people’s stories to guide our lives, it is possible to get involved and narrate from a state of passionate participation.

It is natural to adopt other people’s stories to help create our identities, to fill in gaps in our own experience or intelligence. Stories become easily cemented and rendered inflexible, developing into assumptions upon which a life is lived

I stood twinned in her dark wells. With hair so pale and strange. Windowed away in another world. While the red sun sank eternally.

I looked into her eyes. So dark they seemed all pupil. Eyes in which the sun was setting. In which, I stood beside the sun
