I’m going to Japan at the end of the month so I figured it would be a good time to finally post some stuff from a trip in the summer of 2024. This is from the Hakata Gion Yamakasa Festival in Fukuoka. It’s a 700+ year old tradition where teams from different neighborhoods carry massive decorated shrines called kakiyama through the streets in a timed race. Each shrine weighs close to a ton and the runners sprint while supporters throw water on them to keep them cool. It’s kind of mad and starts early in the morning. It was absolutely monsooning to start but cleared up once the sun came up.
We joined artist Lee Pivnik @eelpicnic for a wet and wild journey up the Miami River—and through time itself—as he guided us through the ancient waterway’s past, present, and possible futures.
The banks of the Miami River have supported human settlements for over ten millennia, serving as a stage for countless stories. On this boat tour, we drifted through the river’s murky memories—exploring the histories that have shaped Downtown Miami while reflecting on what has been lost, altered, or forgotten.
Along the way, Lee shared how the river has been transformed through decades of dredging, development, and geoengineering, using it as a case study for Everglades water management and asking an urgent question: what could this river become if our priorities centered environmental care? —————————————————————————————Thank you @alexmarkow for making this beautiful video!
