I’m excited to share a glimpse into my recent “Listening With” workshop at @bronxmuseum , where participants explored our relationship with the Harlem River through movement, writing, and storytelling! The intergenerational gathering brought together participants from @bronxmuseum ’s Lifelong Studio program for older adults and their Teen Council program for NYC high school students. Grounded in the principles of the Rights of Nature movement, the session invited participants to consider the Harlem River not as a resource to be used, but as a relative, a witness, a neighbor, and a carrier of histories. I am so grateful for this opportunity to exchange stories, perspectives, and presence across generations ✨✨✨ The workshop was part of my Harlem River Artist Residency funded by the US Environmental Protection Agency, administered by the Hudson River Foundation, and supported by the Bronx & Harlem Rivers Urban Waters Federal Partnership, @nynjhep , @bronxartsorg , and with additional support from @pregonesprtt and its ASAP/Artist Space At Pregones initiative. 📸 @canigetawhitney 🙏🏽 @aletanbrown

How Do We Move in Public? May 9 @ 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm Free To RSVP, go to link in bio @socialpracticecuny How Do We Move in Public? is the second program in Social Practice CUNY’s 2026 series How Do We ___________ in Public?: a cycle of four free experimental events responding to contemporary crises shaping the cultural field, including the defunding and targeting of public institutions and the erosion of shared civic space. This second program in the series is partnered with BAAD! Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance during the Boogie Down Dance Series. Organized by Nicolás Dumit Estévez Raful Espejo Ovalles Morel, this event brings together dancers/ choreographers with connections to the Bronx to generate movement-based actions in public spaces in the South Bronx: Argelia Arreola (with support from Pepatián: Bronx Arts ColLABorative), Ana ‘Rokafella’ García, Paloma McGregor/Angela’s Pulse, and Alethea Pace. Responding to escalating surveillance, policing, and state violence, particularly the terrorization of Black and Brown communities under ongoing ICE raids, the program advances movement as a counter-response to neglect, with care, and shared imagination, asking how bodies navigate, reshape, and reclaim urban space under conditions of threat. This program will activate several points along 3rd Avenue and 149th Street, a major cultural crossroads at the heart of the South Bronx called The Hub, and is funded by the Mellon Foundation and the Eugene M. Lang Foundation.

This past Saturday, BCA and Alethea Pace held a workshop at Lehman College’s Bronx Parks Speak Up event. Alethea presented a reflective workshop exploring the relationship of the attendees with the Harlem River through memory, movement, writing, and storytelling. “Listening With: Harlem River” invited attendees to slow down and attune to the river—not just as a body of water, but as a living being with wisdom, agency, and its own story to tell. Grounded in the principles of the Rights of Nature movement, this session invited attendees to consider the Harlem River not as a resource to be used, but as a relative, a witness, a neighbor, and a carrier of histories. Join Alethea Pace, at the Pregones Theater on April 26 for the culmination of her artist residency, featuring a short film, new performance work (Is Not Yet), and a panel exploring storytelling through law, science, organizing, and art. The presentation builds on the ongoing community and educational initiative Listening With: Harlem River, which grew out of last summer’s teen workshop. RSVP details in our bio! A look back at our summer youth workshop for “Listening With: Harlem River”—a process-centered initiative rooted in community imagination and collective action around the future of the Harlem River. 🌊✨ Co-facilitated with the incredible @aletanbrown , this week-long workshop invited teens into movement, storytelling, and deep listening as we explored the river as a living being with its own story and needs, and co-drafted a Bill of Rights for the Harlem River. So grateful for this brilliant group of young people: Jovan Cortes, Noelle Dozier, Jabia Haque, Savannah Lee, Anthonella Malla, Yomisell Martinez, Lilah Ramoutar, Jamila Rojas, Sabriha Safa, Marley Sancho, Zaharat Simra & Jamone Small Filmed by @silencelastsforever Special thanks to @randallsisland @storyland_thebxbookhaven @southbronxunite The Harlem River This work is supported by the Harlem River Artist-in-Residence program (U.S. EPA), the Hudson River Foundation, the Bronx & Harlem Rivers Urban Waters Federal Partnership, the NY–NJ Harbor & Estuary Program, and the Bronx Council on the Arts.

Through embodied storytelling, deep listening, and performance, an intergenerational group of participants explores the river as a living being—with its own story, agency, and needs. . This evolving work is being developed through the Harlem River Artist-in-Residence program, funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, administered by the Hudson River Foundation, and supported by the Bronx & Harlem Rivers Urban Waters Federal Partnership, the NY–NJ Harbor & Estuary Program, and the Bronx Council on the Arts. .
