After holding space and time for all that’s been unfolding in our communities, I’ve been feeling uncertain to post this… but as an artist I think it’s my duty to use my voice, so I decided to finally share this piece. I had the beautiful opportunity to choreograph, “When They Come For Us”, for VOICES: UNBOUND, alongside an incredible group of artists who helped build something rooted in truth, care, and community. I’m so grateful to Derrick, Kate, and the entire SGLA fam for creating space for marginalized voices to be seen, heard, and felt. And to my amiga, my sister en espíritu, my dancer, Teresa—thank you. Thank you for your power, your vulnerability, your rawness, and your truth. I couldn’t have done this without you. This dance piece explores the profound emotional journey of immigration—unearthing the darkness, fears, and anxieties that often shadow the lives of immigrants and their children. It begins with the burning of sage, a ritual act of remembrance and protection, as the dancer moves through shadows of displacement toward light, identity, resilience, and hope. Rooted in Latinidad and ancestral strength, When They Come For Us, is both a mourning and a celebration—a danced prayer for those who came before and a fierce offering for those still finding their way during these hard times.
