I met Ginés Liébana back in 2014 through my dear friend Diego, and up until I moved to London, I used to visit his studio in Madrid quite often. He affectionately called me “the Bulgarian Countess” and would greet me with a theatrical bow every time I arrived at his home. Something that always amazed me was how he was just as interested in my stories and perspective on life as I was in his, despite the nearly 80-year age gap and the lifetimes of experience he had lived before me. The last picture on this post was taken during my final visit, just three months before his passing. His mind was almost as sharp as the first day we met, though his fading memory meant I was no longer the Bulgarian countess. He passed away on December 31, 2022, at the age of 101. I am deeply grateful for our friendship and hope to honor it with a project based on the archives of our time together.
