Taking AlBlock to the streets of Berlin- September 25, we explored the parallels between Kreuzberg neighborhood and our practice, we started by giving participants a glimpse of our work in Beit Hanina, then took it to the streets of Berlin—walking, photographing and documenting. A fruitful experience that ended with a collective map that was exhibited in the Kreuzberg museum. 🌟

Rizomm and Cremisan Herbarium are an attempt to listen to what it has to say. 
In Palestine, the soil is a living archive, holding the imprints of memory. It tells us that erasure can take many forms. Like the planting of pine trees by an occupying presence, which erodes local ecosystems. These natural ecosystems become witnesses, monuments, symbols. The local disrupted soil, dried cactus and ever growing lichen speak their own language. 
This is we explored during the Sounds of Places residency, hosted by the Wonder Cabinet and Radio alHara in the Cremisan Valley. Together we explored the intersections of sound, ecology, and identity. Different projects emerged as a result of this residency. Rizomm is an experiment in listening to the land itself. A roll of photographic film, buried in the soil meant to let the land speak for itself. Let the earth tell its own story. Cremisan Herbarium grew from walks through the valley, where plants were collectively chosen as monuments, as symbols, as silent witnesses to history. Photographed as a means to preserve their memory, they form a fragile archive of a disappearing landscape. Each one of them tells its own story. Photographing them meant to give them a voice for it to echo through time. In the face of erasure, the land speaks fro itself. “Cremisan Herbarium” is a project developed during the Sounds of Places Artist Residency in Bethlehem, Palestine, between April and May 2024. Collaborating with Nisreen Tahhan, Sireen Alawi, Areej Ashhab (Al-Block), and Majdi Hadid (IPrint), the work presents images of plants collected from the Cremisan Valley, chosen for their connection to the land and themes of resilience. The book, merging the aesthetics of a scrapbook and a passport, was part of a biophotography workshop where participants documented their walk through the valley with notes, images, and sounds. ‍ The residency, “Sounds of Places,” emphasizes sonic aesthetics and explores the relationship between land, memory, and identity. During the guided walks, participants interacted with the land through plant collection and cyanotype workshops, using UV light to photograph their findings. This process not only connected participants to the physical environment but also invited them to consider how landscapes shape cultural memory, resistance, and belonging. The project also highlights the resilience of the land, exploring how materials such as lichen and plants contribute to the creation of images and memory. These elements, often found in harsh environments, symbolize survival and continuity, echoing the enduring struggle of the Palestinian landscape. The project seeks to let the land “speak” for itself, emphasizing its autonomy and its role in shaping cultural narratives.

Our talk focused on our recent work in Wadi Al-Sarar, a valley stretching from Palestine’s Central Mountains to the Mediterranean Sea. We shared an introductory video and excerpts from our ‘Walker’s Logs’ series, highlighting collective walking as a tool for mapping the contemporary Palestinian landscape. We concluded with tea brewed from herbs collected from Palestine’s mountains, including sage and thyme (zaatar). Yet, even these memories and its people, we are losing year after year.
