As last week was Alberta Forest Week, we wanted to celebrate the heart of our forest sector: the people. We sent a small token of appreciation (celebratory cookies 🍪🌲) to forestry workers across the province as a small reminder that their work is valued.👷👷♀️

Let’s spotlight some key species in Alberta’s forests as we spend a Thursday in the Trees!
Did you know that…
•The wood of a Douglas Fir is strong, valuable, and often used for construction and other building needs. It is also the prime choice for your Christmas tree. 🎄
•Grizzly Bears love what we call the “edge habitat”. Research has shown that the sections of young forest on the border of an established one often contain an important food source for bears.🐻
•The Alberta native, Red-Osier Dogwood, can be found near bodies of water, as it thrives in damp soil and helps prevent erosion. Talk about resiliency and adaptability!
The more you know!💭

Today, we wear red as we remember, honour, and mourn the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two‑Spirit People (MMIWG2S+) across Alberta and Canada. We use this symbol to continue raising awareness of the enduring effects of these violent crimes.
The term #RedDressDay was coined by Metis artist Jamie Black as a response to this critical issue.
You can read more about her project and Red Dress Day at the links in our bio.

A big thank you to @insideeducation for having AFPA and the @work_wild team out last weekend at the Youth Environmental Leadership Summit, Regenerate!
Students from all across Alberta attend to learn more about topics such as forestry, wildlife, environmental stewardship, and more. 🌱🦌
AFPA’s President, Jason Krips, spoke about sustainable forest management, innovation, and the future of forestry in Alberta in his keynote address.
Students then collaborated to take on Work Wild’s forest planning challenge and learned all about the many diverse jobs in forestry during the career roundtables.
It was great to see so many students ready to become the next generation of leaders in forestry!

Today, Corey Hogan, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, announced a new investment of $2.3 million into Western Archrib’s new mass timber mill in @sturgeoncounty .
This investment will go to advancing innovation and expanding Western Archrib’s production capacity, ultimately increasing supply for housing and other critical infrastructure. We applaud the federal government for taking action to increase competitiveness and strengthen Alberta’s forest industry.
