Extremely excited to announce the latest on The Jewel Garden - "Midnight's Chimes" from Akira Film Script.
For much of my life, ideas and projects that come from an off-the-cuff remark or joke have been so fruitful. "Midnight’s Chimes" somewhat falls into that category, but Akira Film Script aka Ryan Watts gets all the credit. In some writings I’d done around Stupid Dreams, I said something to the effect of “the sound of your neighbor’s chimes at 3 AM (oh that’s an interesting album idea),” and that maybe struck a nerve as a jumping off point for "Midnight’s Chimes."
There’s a beautiful eeriness that runs through the guts of this 50-minute piece. Tension is there in the spatial landscape with underlying psychoacoustic ephemera. Echoes born from extended processing techniques push against the sharp metallics from the steel chimes, fading into an air of softness. Midway, as hollowed-out drones move in for closer inspection, the pressure begins to dissipate into spacious echoes and buried ghost melodies. Pings and rings are always there, though, even when blurred to oblivion, sending random sequences out for inspection. Then, somehow, in the most organic passages, the weight carried through from the first minutes lets up, clouds part, and a full moon beckons.
"Midnight’s Chimes" is an album full of resonance, familiar and odd, so it's no surprise it resonates with me. It takes us somewhere and leaves us in a better spot than we began, and right now, that’s more than I can ask.
