Rana arborícola lechosa (Trachycephalus vermiculatus)
En nuestra última expedición a Caño Negro tuvimos la gran suerte de encontrar esta increíble especie de rana, que sin duda se llevó el premio al “bicho de la noche”.
Se trata de una rana grande, nocturna y arborícola, con unos ojos realmente espectaculares que resaltan entre la oscuridad del bosque.
Su nombre común, rana lechosa, se debe a una sustancia tóxica de consistencia pegajosa y lechosa que segrega a través de la piel. Este mecanismo de defensa no solo la protege de posibles depredadores, sino que también le ayuda a mantenerse hidratada, especialmente durante la época más seca. Esta sustancia puede provocar irritación en la piel, por lo que siempre es importante evitar manipularlas.
Este individuo apareció gracias a los fuertes aguaceros que comenzaron a caer durante la noche, activando a muchas especies de anfibios y regalándonos un encuentro inolvidable.

While out searching for snakes in the Piedmont, we came across this venomous Copperhead crossing the road. Before giving it safe passage, I was able to snap these quick photographs. This species is the most common, widespread, and also the “least” venomous out of the six venomous species we’re proud to have in North Carolina.
The venom of Copperheads is hemotoxic and will attack blood cells to cause hemorrhaging. Symptoms include local swelling, pain, and hemorrhaging at the bite site. According to NCWildlife.gov, they account for roughly over 90% of all bites due to their widespread distribution. Regardless of the species if you do get envenomated by the snake, it is best to seek medical attention immediately because every individual is different in how their body reacts.
Aesthetically I prefer Cottonmouths over Copperheads, but this is still such a gorgeous animal we have here and should always be treated with respect. With their keeled scales and elliptical pupils, I can never get over how much these vipers resemble dragons!
