I worked my first bookish event in Frankenmuth, Michigan this past weekend. For those of you who don’t know, Frankenmuth is a German-themed town (and jaaa, your girl A.J. does have German roots). It’s a bit touristy, but a fun Michigan day destination with lots of great food and family things to do! My family has been going for YEARS, so I was pumped to participate as a vendor. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Book events are the best place to talk up your book and not feel like you’re yelling into a void. People stop and genuinely want to hear what you’ve got to say. And even if they don’t buy anything, that still feels really good. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I was surrounded by so much love and support and also got to know some other Michigan-based authors, which always makes my heart happy. Author life is a little less lonely when you can surround, laugh and commiserate with others on a similar path. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Hoping to work more Frankenmuth events in the future! Whether it’s craft related, marketing centric or creative conundrums, the struggle is very real. The road to writing and publishing a novel has presented it’s share of challenges and opportunities over the years. Writing is so much more than just world building, unhinged plots, and memorable characters. A finished book is an iceberg of the BS it took to get there. Which to be fair, is all part of the process. And as much as some of these challenges make me spiral a little, it’s worth it. Every. Single. Day. Sometimes it’s distractions. Other times, it’s real life things pulling focus. Most times, it’s me laying at bed at night running through outlines and potential dialogue in my mind before sleep takes me. Because a lot of the time, when I do sit in front of my computer, my brain lets a massive fart. Does thinking about one’s manuscript in such ways seem healthy? I’m going with no. But here we are anyway. I’ve missed writing. I haven’t actually done it in a few months and I get this bizarre low key depression when I go for bouts without it. My time has been mostly spent cramming all my efforts into feeling fully prepared for the book cons I have coming up this summer and I’m feeling the heat as my first fast approaches. I cannot express how incredible it’ll be to write again after July.
