To our Community:
This past Wednesday, September 17th, a devastating 5-alarm fire took over 481 Van Brunt Street, the building that houses our beloved workspace @wastegeneral , the headquarters of our business. The building sustained extensive damage from the fire as well as the 48 hour water pumping efforts to put it out. Documentation is limited because we have not been able to fully access the space yet as they evaluate the structural damage to the building. We have included the images that we have been able to take. We are both born and raised in Red Hook and have been active on the pier for over 10 years. We are reaching out to our extended community to help us find our footing after this terrible loss.

Scaling an idea with a limited budget
The project felt so much bigger than what we were able to do, the potential holes that come with being in a label structure, having a pragmatic budget, fighting one’s own mania. Putting the cart before the horse.
Dreams of the second label release?
Beyond that how does one achieve true creative freedom without budget & time constraints.
Is that even worth it when working with limitations leads to invention?
The importance of single art when album art will erase it.
Why bother
We played with the viewers expectation.

It’s an amazing idea but did it work and does that matter
Our constant objective of playing by the rules of a true “album release” while also braking them along the way.

A mentor once told me

Before you are ready to ask the hand of another to take on that labor.
Mental exercise:
How on earth do you ask for help, when you can barley offer anything monetary to your self in return
Some say you can offer community?
Others see learning as a compensation.
Well that doesn’t hold water when rent is due.
Next think you know,
Congrats you’ve accepted the cold embrace of capitalism into your most sacred space, art.
Can you really see past art and commerce?
Of course you can.
This makes the concept of
DIY as an end goal pejorative.
How could one possibly do everything them self? All while, uphold creative integrity, Without sacrificing the end result.
Does it scale?
So then you, delegate tasks to those most sooted, all while growing, making mistakes, relearning. Compromising, seeing the bigger picture.
Then finally when everything feels like it’s operational and makes sense you ask your self…
Is the vessel that exists after the replacements the same idea as the vessel that existed before the replacements?

With no hope for the future, and no idea of how to get there
Art/creative direction, graphic design, illustration, packaging, marketing is worthless if the music/musician it’s supporting doesn’t independently have that soul and power to stand on their own two.
You do that and then some, which makes my role easy/ fun yet at the same time so impossibly difficult.
When I’m/ we’re faced with projects as earth shattering as yours that are dropping every… (year, month, week, WTH) I can’t help but find ways to magnify the genius and reinvent my own way of making art in hopes I can keep up.
I hope what I do only frames your world.
