April & May 2025
End of the wet & back into the field.
[1 - 7]
First survey of the year to Mount Zero-Taravale Sanctuary to conduct population monitoring for the Northern Bettong, which was reintroduced to the property in 2023. A special opportunity to witness this highly threatened species slowly but surely increase in numbers across this part of their historic range.
Also got to observe some of the intricate land management at work across the Sanctuary. Burning early in the dry season allows these cool burns to slowly trickle through the forest and maintains an open understory, which the Bettongs rely on. Fire management informed by First Nations burning practices is vital for maintaining healthy forests, whilst reducing the risk of intense wildfires ripping through the landscape later into the dry season.
[8 - 10]
Significant flooding in south-west Queensland meant a couple of cancelled trips. But got to spend some time on the Sunny Coast at Curramore planting trees and conducting various fauna surveys.
[11 - 20]
Can’t be all work and no play though, so managed to sneak in some side mission over these busy couple of months…
Visiting @wrlani in Brisvegas // @ajjj_s Bucks weekend // @churchandap@zipsgalore show in Syd // @radiumdolls@okmotels in Kenilworth // Matilda’s in Newcastle with @andyh0we //

Jan to March 2025 - soaking up our first wet season in Cairns. Got stuck into our gardening era 🌱 // Gave the Syd crew the Cairns tour, including the best of FNQ’s culinary delights (Roti Shack) 🌴🫓 // Had some epic reef times thanks to @jonahlafferty and Jam Jam 🚤 and shared some fresh catches with @marypurplepatch 🐟
Crack out the moisturiser, it must be dry season. Give me FNQ winter all day
Lush four days on the Thorsborne Trail, Hinchinbrook Island
(PSA don’t listen to the anti-moisturiser propagandists e.g. @jonahlafferty 🧴)

Soundtracked by the best rap/hip-hop album to come out in past the 12 months (imo, anywhere, let alone out of NZ), which has essentially become a daily listen since this trip
Track 2: Drinking In The Morning

First field trip since joining the @australianwildlifeconservancy team up north. Cracked 100+ bird species for this trip in just over a couple weeks (precisely zero pictured here but I promise they were out there). Still lots to see & more to learn 🦅
These two concrete cowboys are heading North for some time in the tropics 🤠🌴
There’s nothing quite like Sydney summer tho so here’s a mix of memories from Syd and surrounds to mark off the end of this chapter. Will miss these skies and the croc-free waters (but not the traffic.. and the prices $$$). But most of all will miss all our people that made big city livin a breeze 🍃
