Had the best time celebrating the close of our exhibtion Resisting Forgetfulness - The Aesthetic of Afrobeat curated by @wcedoesart . Which celebrated the collaborations between musicians and visual artists to produce some of the most iconic album covers - Rooted in the history and legacy of the great @lemighariokwu who is renowned for visualizing Fela’s iconic record sleeves in the 70’s and 80’s - Paintings were converted to covers, before graphic design turned into an almost exclusively digital medium.
So much love to all 200+ of you who turned up to support, buy posters, and jam with us. @orokoradio helped us celebrate contemporary pioneers @showdemcamp and of course, it was January 9th so we had to celebrate life with @pen_wizard_esq

On The Other Side of Languish by @reginaldsylvester2 curated by @diallosimonponte for @limbomuseum ✨
“The body of work employs tactics of Minimalism as a passageway into the spiritual. Each sculpture takes the shape of a three-dimensional crescent which Sylvester regards as “half-gates” and similarly shaped cuts appear throughout the paintings. When two of the sculptures face each other that configures a “full gate”. here form acts a a prism, a vortex and a portal.”

GALLERY LAB
In 2022 and 2023 I had the honor of co-curating the Gallery LAB section of the FNB Art Joburg ( Johannesburg Art Fair) - the oldest fair on the continent.
The Johannesburg Art Fair underwent a structural overhaul in 2019- Catalyzed by an acquisition - @msibeko took over the helm of the institution and refined its vision and purpose. At the time the widely accepted “Art Fair” model was still exclusionary of new voices and young spaces. The barriers to entry were high - costly and based on old-world respectability politics.
The LAB was created to respond to the ecosystem on the continent - which was made up of mostly galleries operating for < 5 years. A heavy subsidy is built into the fair’s business model, and an incubatory approach to the section has helped it to become a commercial launch pad for many new and experimental voices on the continent. With a flexible approach to exhibiting, the section includes experimental works and spaces. New categories emerge. Very glad to be back in Joburg this week, with @citizenprojectspace September 5-7 LAB booth #N
