So this is a follow up to my last post! During production, it was decided that Moana needed less comfort on her voyage, and therefore Pua was left behind. Because of that, Heihei became unbearable as a solo cranky rooster with no sweet Pua to play him off of. So he transitioned into the dumdum he is now. I wanted to update the performance test, and luckily Marketing had already decided they wanted to use this test, so I was able to finish it with Dumb Heihei. I thought it would be funny if Heihei inexplicably appeared screen right from out of nowhere - just after exiting screen left. In one version I used two Heihei’s and had his tail exiting screen left on the same frame as his beak entering screen right, but that caused too many questions about Heihei’s potentially magical abilities for a simple Marketing animation 😂.
My quest to 2D animate a giant octopus over all my #disneyanimation shots in my spare time continues. I don’t know why 🐙

My dad volunteers at @campredcedar and their annual fundraiser/auction is coming up April 24th in #fortwayne. He asked if I had any artwork to donate and I was like NOPE but I can make some!
So the main characters I have Anim supervised over the years are Gary DeSnake, Pua and Heihei from #zootopia2 and #moana and decided to do some art with them. I was inspired by tattoo designs of snakes and chickens and riffed off of that to make this design. Started with a very crappy thumbnail I doodled in a meeting. Then a paper/pencil drawing, then a pencil drawing in #procreate. Then ink, then I wrestled with color and shadows until the final version. I drew so many scales you guys. Printed on nice textured watercolor paper and framed.

Nothing like making #zootopia2 with friends. This was a challenging, rewarding, and amazing experience. Supervising Gary (and Jesus!) was one of the most brilliant experiences of my life. Got to meet and work with amazing people. Made lifelong friends. Even got to meet and work with one of my heroes @kehuyquan who brought his whole amazing self to this character. We made 3D printed Gary’s as an Anim Dept crew gift, thanks to @suzankimart , and made enamel pins for my Gary team (come find me if you haven’t gotten yours yet 😂!) So thrilled with how the film has been received. What a ride.
I’ve been working as a Supervising Animator for Gary DeSnake now for 20 months and it has been super challenging, fun, and rewarding. Cannot wait for the world to see #zootopia2. But the REAL star of the show is this #rapunzel #fryingpan that I’ve now animated in not one, not two, but THREE #disneyanimation projects. And yes, it’s the SAME ONE.
I had such a blast working on the @trentanimation and @sharktooth72 short #onceuponastudio. Animating characters from as far as 15 years ago to now was such a fun trip down memory lane. Here’s a shot I did with #WreckitRalph, #Raya, #Flynn and #Maximus. The first shot is the final version, then Dan’s boards, my video reference, blocking pass, and then the final spline pass. Carpet and Mr. Toad animated by @animwoodsy and Mickey and Scar by Tony DeRosa. I was so grateful to get this shot since physical comedy is my favorite. Thanks @felizimation !! Fun fact about this shot is that the entire set is computer generated. The internal shots of the studio are all filmed but the external shots are all rendered out of the modeling/lighting department. So I got to animate a trash can! 😁 Ralph is always SUCH a fun character to work on. I’ll post other #behindthescenes from this short soon!

I had done some pre-production work with #splat on #StrangeWorld, but this was my first shot with him for the film. In an earlier screening, red splat played a slightly larger role, but he ultimately ended up being a background Splat that sort of showed the rules of how these dendritic cells find and flag foreign objects, and sick the reapers on them. Some people did NOT like animating Splat, but I absolutely loved it. In fact, I only animated Splat shots for my entire duration of the film and enjoyed every second of it. This is a typical approach for me. Always started with a bouncing ball pass to get the timing/acting right, and build from there. Creatures on Strange World required a layered approach to animating, even though strong posing was still really important. Shoutout to Riannon Delanoy who animated the Reapers in the shot. If you’ve seen the film you know what part I’m talking about! It’s insanity. But the shot was too big for one person so it got split up and I animated red splat. Shoutout to Anim supervisor @welcome_to_louieville who was a genius Splat Master!

Hey remember this movie? This is an example of a shot’s dialogue changing mid-animation. When I first got issued it, #Bruno used to count, half in English and half in Spanish (uno, dos, tres, four, five, six) and he would point to specific pieces of wood behind the walls. But a few days later the directors wanted to try a more funny version where he does a little sing-song “knock on wood” line which ended up in the final film. Luckily the timing and ideas still lined up in a general way so I didn’t have to completely redo it. When first starting a shot like this I’ll lay in the body mechanics and make sure that’s mostly working, and then do a facial pass afterwards. I find that if the body language is doing most of the heavy lifting in a shot like this, the face is icing on the cake. You can also see it evolve from my blocking pass to add gestures like crossing the fingers, and #Mirabel spending more time looking at where he knocked with a confused face.
