When I say âyesâ to a bride, my brain doesnât stop working. Iâm thinking of a million and one ways to bring her vision to life. This one was especially meaningful: I created a handmade hairpiece and adorned it one pearl at a time. So much love and time went into this look⌠and Iâd happily do it again. #HairByAggie

If you look closely, the flowers are a bit wilted in the second look. I had to be very careful handling them, even then, they wilted within 20 minutes of shooting. The most delicate and beautiful flowers!

Part 1: Drawing parallels

This piece, Silent Guardian, was part of the Mirror exhibition.
It is inspired by the Mimosa pudica, also known as the sensitive plant. In some West African communities, itâs believed this plant was used during the transatlantic slave trade as a form of security. If the leaves were already folded, it could signal that someone had recently passed through, helping people avoid danger.
Cornrows carry a similar meaning. Patterns were braided into the hair to map routes, send messages, or guide escapes.
I used freshly picked mimosa flowers (thank you, @gracenfor for helping me pick them 30 minutes before the shoot! And for being the perfect muse)The flowers were very delicate! They had to be picked right before, and we had about 20 minutes to capture the look before they wilted.
This piece also speaks to the hypervigilance that often follows the Black experience.
