A 19th century reference book (philology? anthropology? art history? nobody remembers) that fell into a tropical swamp and was rescued, then restored by a kind woman in curlers. Caked in time and organic residue too dense to scrub off, its pages reveal a city of private sorrowsβ€”minute, expansive, and strangely familiar. To read it is to get lost in the aisles of millennia. Kimberley Chia Qin's debut collection traces the thresholds between girlhood and womanhood, and the messy inheritances that shape them. At once a reckoning and a toast, these poems move through family, grief, illness and a host of other growing painsβ€”tracing how they bind us, how they break us, and how they bequeath us a license to love. These poems reach across time and space to gather at a dining table laden with ginseng, kueh and cut fruit, offering a feast of loss, stolen intimacies and other tender cuts of the human condition. They ask us all to sit, and eat. 𝙃𝙀𝙩 π™‚π™žπ™§π™‘π™¨ π™ƒπ™–π™«π™š π™Žπ™©π™€π™’π™–π™˜π™ 𝙄𝙨𝙨π™ͺπ™šπ™¨ is a remedy against that age-old problem: not a girl, not yet a woman.
