Brian Bamanya, known professionally as Afrorack, is a Ugandan multidisciplinary artist, engineer, and musician who has pioneered Africa’s first DIY modular synthesizer. Driven by a passion for electronics and a desire to make modular synthesis accessible in Uganda, Bamanya constructed his own synthesizer using locally sourced components and self-taught engineering skills. This innovative instrument, also named “The Afrorack,” serves as both his artistic moniker and a symbol of his commitment to blending technology with African musical traditions. He has appeared at several international festivals which include Sonar, Rewire, Elevate, Dakar Art Biennale and CTM among others. In May 2022, Afrorack released his self-titled debut album, The Afrorack, through the Ugandan label Hakuna Kulala. The album showcases his unique approach to electronic music, merging polyrhythmic structures inherent in African music with elements of acid, techno, and ambient sounds. Tracks like “African Drum Machine” exemplify his use of Euclidean rhythm sequencing to create complex, algorithmic patterns that echo traditional East African rhythms. The album was received with popular acclaim making it to several music writers’ best albums of 2022 including The Wire Magazine top 50 albums of 2022, The Quietus best of 2022 and He has also been featured on the BBC world service radio. 🔴Friday February 20th live AFRORACK (@hakuna.kulala 🇺🇬 @nyegenyege ) set warm up Terror Tropikal (@niko_etxe ) djset @rbstrada ——— @afrorck Brian Bamanya is the first person to build DIY modular synth setups in Africa, hence his alias Afrorack. The 30-year-old engineering wizard started his music journey playing guitar and creating his own instruments, until he dove into the world of modular synths. Based on his own experimentations and online findings, Bryan developed an extensive home-built modular synth set-up on which he’s been performing for the last two years during dazzling improvised live-sets mixing African rhythms, techno and acid house. He performed for the first time in Europe at CTM 20 and took part in their Hacklab laboratory, right before the pandemic, since then Afrorack is regularly travelling to showcase his music, give workshops & talks. His debut album was released with Hakuna Kulala on May 22 and got critically acclaimed. 2024/23 highlight shows: CTM festival, Rewire festival, SInsal festival, Bad Bonn Kilbi… —— From 10pm Only for arci members

Sabato 21.02.26 🎛️ SYNTH DIY WORKSHOP A cura di Afrorack (@afrorck ) Ogni partecipante costruirà un oscillatore light reactive. Durante l’incontro verranno presentati i principali componenti elettronici (resistori, condensatori, ecc.) e le tecniche fondamentali di saldatura. Si parlerà anche di come le competenze elettroniche possano essere utili per musicisti, sia nella costruzione di strumenti personalizzati che nella riparazione di dispositivi. Al termine del workshop ogni partecipante porterà a casa il proprio synth autoprodotto. Il workshop è in inglese e non sono richieste conoscenze pregresse. AFRORACK: Brian Bamanya, aka Afrorack, è un pioniere dei sintetizzatori modulari DIY in Africa. Ingegnere e musicista, ha costruito un proprio setup modulare con cui porta dal vivo performance improvvisate che intrecciano ritmi africani, techno e acid house.
