AFRISOS is a platform for the bravest filmmakers and photographers - those who push themselves to get out of the comfort zone. We believe that the most authentic storytelling comes from getting deep, and we are not afraid to challenge ourselves.

With the Bangweulu Wetlands as both backdrop and guide, AFRISOS — in partnership with @greatspineofafrica and @africanparksnetwork Bangweulu Wetlands — invites five emerging filmmakers from Zambia, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Mozambique, and Democratic Republic of the Congo to step into a 10-day, expedition-style filmmaking workshop in one of the world’s most significant wetlands. Set in Zambia, this vast landscape is home to over 400 bird species and one of the last remaining strongholds of the elusive Shoebill. But beyond its wildlife, Bangweulu is a place shaped by people — where water, memory, and movement have sustained communities for generations. Selected participants will journey into the wetlands alongside filmmakers and conservationists, learning through immersion — crafting short films rooted in place, culture, and connection. Applications close 13 April 2026 and are reviewed on a rolling basis, so early submission is encouraged. Workshop Dates: 28 April – 11 May 2026 Apply via the link in our bio. #bangweuluwetlands #conservation #filmmaking

NEW PODCAST 🔊 Promoting African Storytelling with Jigar Ganatra from AFRISOS 👉 Search for ‘Protect The World’ wherever you get your podcasts or tap on the ‘Podcast’ link in my bio to listen now! In this episode of Protect The World, I speak with @jiganatra – founder and chairman of the African School of Storytelling (@afrisos ). And as a bonus, we were also joined by the organisation’s co-founder, Frank Papushka (@frankpapushka ), and their program’s director, Simi Nickmanova (@siminickman ). Based in Tanzania but working across the African continent, AFRISOS exists to provide opportunities to the next generation of African nature filmmakers and community-based storytellers. Over the years they’ve delivered dozens of innovative programs, and collaborated with a range of Indigenous communities to produce authentic, impact-driven films. The team joined me live on location in Tanzania’s spectacular Eastern Arc Mountains, and it made for an incredible conversation, which I hope you enjoy as much as I did. As always, half the funds that came into the Patreon this month were donated directly to AFRISOS. This money will go towards helping the organisation run even more media-based fellowship programs for their participants, and assisting with the opening of the brand new Hadzabe Media Center.   You can donate to AFRISOS by visiting afrisos.ngo, and if you’d like to help me give more money to more amazing NGOs in the future, please consider signing up to the Patreon via the link in my bio for as little as $5 a month.    A huge thank you to everyone who supports this podcast, and to Jigar, Frank and Simi for joining me on this episode. If you enjoyed it, please be sure to leave a review and share it with your friends and family. And it's on! What began with the near-impossible task of selecting 5 out of 200+ applicants has culminated into a venture to one of the most remote and largely unexplored ecosystems in East Africa! -Mentees arrive in Tanzania. ☑️. -Hiking and camping gear packed. ☑️. -Legs stretched and convoy cruisers loaded. ☑️ . -A great attitude and the will to endure the unbeaten path. ☑️ and locked in! Hosted in collaboration with @greatspineofafrica , Framing the Arc is one of a series of expedition-style workshops dedicated to exploring further; in pursuit of deeply authentic, untold stories; narratives that challenge the standard lens through which we frame nature and its custodians. On the other side of this workshop, 5 filmmakers will emerge having tested the true value of immersion in nature; and their 5 films will reflect the spirit of the people, the species, and the ancient culture that frames each story. How will they fare? Follow along as our mentees navigate the Nguru Mountains; one of the 13 blocks of the Eastern Arc Mountains; and bring its world to the screen! #storytelling #filmaking #africanstorytelling #nature #culture #conservation #naturefilmakers #eastafrica #EasternArcMountains #FramingTheArc
