Hogg Memorial Auditorium, designed by legendary architect Paul Cret and opened in 1933, has served
@utaustintx for nearly a century. This landmark building has hosted lectures, performances, final exams, and graduations. In recent decades, however, the auditorium had fallen into disrepair and was struggling to accommodate the evolving campus community.
In 2023, University Unions managed a stunning restoration of the storied event space – representing the first renovation on campus to be LEEDv4 BD+C Platinum certified. Work included a complete overhaul of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, new seating, an accessible lift to the stage, and gender-inclusive restrooms. A striking wood wall was introduced to acoustically separate the lobby from the 1,000-seat auditorium, drawing inspiration from the building's original carved plaster. Additional sound engineering treatments and a state-of-the-art A/V system were installed to enhance audio quality.
The team of experts involved in this project, including
@jacobsconnects ,
@hopeswindows ,
@mckinneyyorkarchitects ,
@chamberlinroofingwaterproofing ,
@spawglass1953 , and Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc., balanced restoration with modernization, enlarging the lobby while preserving its historic details. The transformed auditorium now serves as a vibrant hub for students and visitors, revitalizing its traditional role and encouraging the University to continue to pursue best preservation practices on campus. Hook ‘em!
