Communities across the country are coming together in solidarity against the cruelty of the Trump administration, specifically ICE violence. On January 28, 2026, Advent Lutheran Church on Manhattan’s Upper West Side held a Sing-In ed by Vicar Nick, honoring those who have died at the hands of ICE. Actions like this continue to grow larger, louder, and more diverse as people unite in defense of human dignity. . Regularly, I am reminded that it's a good thing I'm not God. (For a number of reasons!) But one reason is that I am ready to throw in the towel on the regular. I see people and situations that seem too far gone, or experience people I'd rather be mad at than forgive. How could God see healing and potential in “ those people “anyway? And then I realize, that to someone else, I am those people. And suddenly God’s refusal to give up on us feels like necessary grace rather than foolishness. In this Sunday’s story of Saul/Paul and Ananias, I can only imagine how hard it was for Ananias to follow God’s call to heal the person who had been successfully persecuting his community. But because God is faithful, Ananias places faith, reluctantly, in God’s vision. He takes a chance on a love that is bigger, a love that includes even our enemies, a love that Jesus was killed for. And through that Saul becomes Paul, a faithful messenger of the Gospel. And I imagine also someone who had to make a lot of amends before he was able to be truly embraced in the community. Because love doesn’t erase responsibility for our actions. But it makes possible redemption, forgiveness, transformation and resurrection. I an humbled by the thought that given enough love and time (and that time is God’s time not our own) there is no one and nothing that is irredeemable in the presence of our Creator. Amen See you in our New York City sanctuary or our online sanctuary at 11am (EST) through YouTube Live (@adventlutheranchurch589 ) as we gather and continue to live into the promise of resurrection.

Final Music Monday Concert of the season...TONIGHT!! May 11, doors open at 6:45pm! Featuring the Parker Quartet, Nicholas Phan & our own Aaron Wunsch. The Parker Quartet brings its “exceptional virtuosity [and] imaginative interpretation” (Washington Post) to Schubert’s searing “Death and the Maiden” Quartet, 200 years after its premiere in 1826. They are joined by renowned Schubert interpreter, tenor Nicholas Phan, for the song on which the Quartet is based. Phan, “one of the world’s most remarkable singers” (Boston Globe), also offers Schubert’s great song cycle, Die schöne Müllerin (The Beautiful Miller’s Daughter), with Music Mondays Artistic Director, Aaron Wunsch. As always, all concerts are free. Learn more at Music Mondays is a ministry of Advent Lutheran Church.

Sometimes the things that make the most sense seem to make no sense at all. Paul and Silas are in jail. Nothing is looking up, except for them. In the depths of their struggle, they pray and sing songs and praise God. Scripture is littered with people who choose to praise God in the face of struggle. The three young men about to be thrown into the fiery furnace by King Nebuchadnezzar refused to back down. When the Hebrew people were oppressed by pharaoh, they continued to worship God. When Jesus was being pursued by the powers that be, he continued to place his heart in the hands of the Holy. That doesn’t mean they ignored the reality, but rather, they chose in the face of such hardship to praise a God who is greater. What we feed grows. What would change in our lives if we decided to invest ourselves in praise? To continue, despite whatever is around us, to stay connected to the One who created the Cosmos. What would it look like to continue to feed our faith and our relationship with the Holy even in the face of hardship? The resurrection reality is just that; it recognizes that there is more to this moment then can be seen, that God is greater, and that the death-dealing oppressive powers of this world cannot and will not win. See you in our New York City sanctuary or our online sanctuary at 11am (EST) through YouTube Live (@adventlutheranchurch589 ) as we gather and continue to live into the promise of resurrection.

Mother's Day Across Borders Each day thousands of people are held in detention by U.S. immigration authorities, separated from their families as part of the current campaign of mass deportation. Thousands more are housed temporarily in shelters across Mexico after being forcibly removed from the United States. The Border Church / La Iglesia Fronteriza invites all people of good will - and faith communities from every tradition - to send a message this Mother's Day (May 10, 2026). DONATE A YELLOW FLOWER NOW AS A TANGIBLE SIGN OF SOLIDARITY AND SUPPORT. All flowers will be delivered by trusted local organizers to sites of significance in the campaign of mass deportation -- Detention Centers, County and Municipal Jails and Courthouses in the United States, Ports of Entry on the US-Mexico border, and Migrant Shelters in Mexico. You can donate your flower in memory or in honor of a friend or loved one, or in solidarity with a detainee or deportee who is known to you.
