Building on a warmly received open call, Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad proudly presents the first edition of the Emergence Programme, a group exhibition featuring five emerging artists under the age of 30 whose practices explore evolving forms, fresh narratives, and contemporary artistic dialogues.

Born in Thrissur in Kerala and now based out of Baroda, Gujarat, Adnan Kamal ( @adnnstudio ) is a self-taught multi-disciplinary artist whose work spans sculpture and drawing. Rooted in exploration and largely inspired by nature, his drawings and sculptures are personal narratives shaped by intuition, emotion, and the environment. “Nature offers a quiet space where my thoughts begin to take shape. A fleeting image, a passing sensation—something as subtle as the way light filters through leaves—often becomes the starting point. From there, the process unfolds slowly….I often find myself drawn to forgotten or overlooked landscapes, trying to give form to what feels like a haunting absence. I see my work as never fully finished, but always becoming. It’s a dialogue with the present moment, shaped by quiet observation and transformation.”
Being self-taught, Adnan took a circuitous route to realising his artistry. He then found himself working in fashion with Harri—a turning point in his journey as an artist. What started as a professional relationship turned into a mentorship, influencing the way he saw the world, people, places, and personalities. More than anything, it helped him look at materials beyond their materiality, as something with potential and meaning.
Adnan’s practice is largely defined by his curiosity with materials and how they interact with each other. In his drawings he uses mostly ink and charcoal, allowing for spontaneity and fluidity. In his sculptural practice he tends to use materials he encounters in daily life—Plaster of Paris, rubber, wire, stone, and even used clothes. “I never set out with the intention of creating a particular style... A big part of it came through constant drawing, experimenting, and simply observing what felt natural and instinctive. It’s less about deciding on a “look” and more about finding a rhythm in how I respond to materials, forms, and the world around me,” he says.
The artist is currently focused quite heavily on figurative drawing alongside creating prints for Harri’s upcoming fashion show.

Each tree, in his eyes, carries its own story—some standing tall and confident, while others curve inward, embodying introspection or resilience shaped by time and hardship.
“Untitled”, in particular, explores the profound, almost human-like presence of trees, portraying them as living beings with distinct personalities. Each tree is imbued with a sense of character, as if it carries its own story and individuality. The piece invites viewers to engage with the trees not just as natural entities, but as creatures whose traits and essence resonate deeply with our own.
Through his drawings, Adnan explores the parallels between human nature and the organic world, using trees as a visual metaphor for strength, fragility, and transformation. The act of drawing becomes an intimate engagement with these ideas, capturing the essence of movement, light, and shadow within the natural forms he encounters. By rendering trees with expressive lines and intricate textures, his work not only highlights their individuality but also reflects a deeper exploration of the interconnectedness between nature and human existence.

In nature, trees are not static; they are living, breathing entities that shift and change with light, weather and time. This work delves into this concept, offering a direct reflection of the continuous transformations that shape both the natural world and the human spirit.
Adnan Kamal’s sculptural practice draws inspiration from trees—viewing them as living, evolving entities that respond to their environment. His figures reflect this organic dynamism, designed to shift in perception based on the viewer’s angle, much like trees that reveal new forms with changes in light and perspective.
Material plays a crucial role in this transformation. Adnan primarily works with terracotta clay, plaster of Paris, and cloth—chosen for their ability to evoke the textures and tactile sensations of nature. These materials allow him to create sculptures that appear in motion, stretching and bending as if shaped by wind, weather, and time.
By translating the ever-changing essence of nature into three-dimensional forms, Adnan’s sculptures capture the fluid relationship between humanity and the natural world, reinforcing the idea that stillness and movement coexist in a continuous cycle of transformation.

Adnan Kamal, a multidisciplinary artist born in Kerala and currently based in Baroda, explores the intricate relationship between nature and humanity through sculpture and drawing. A self-taught artist, Adnan’s practice is deeply informed by his early experience in the fashion industry, where he worked as a fashion visual artist under London-based menswear designer Hari. This background shaped his unique approach to form, texture, and narrative.
His debut exhibition, From Field to Frame (2024) at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Baroda, introduced his signature style—where organic forms merge with human figures, capturing the fluid connection between living beings and the natural world.
Inspired by the stillness and dynamism of nature, Adnan’s sculptures reflect the way trees respond to their environment—stretching, bending, and shifting with time. Crafted from terracotta clay, plaster of Paris, and cloth, his work embodies the tactile sensations of the natural world, evoking transformation and interconnectedness. His ink drawings extend this philosophy, portraying trees as sentient beings, each with its own personality, strength, and fragility—mirroring the complexities of human nature.
Through his evolving body of work, Adnan Kamal invites viewers to engage with nature as a living, breathing presence—one that continuously shapes and is shaped by the world around it.
