Saturday in Minneapolis, a week after the killing of Alex Pretti by federal agents. A memorial continues to grow for Pretti at 26th and Nicollet at the scene of the shooting, and hundreds of community members gathered to spell out the message, “ICE OUT” with luminaries for air traffic overhead on frozen Lake Nokomis. #onassignment for the @startribune #minneapolis #minnesota #photojournalism

A federal agent shot and killed Alex Pretti, of Minneapolis, this morning. Bystander video shows several agents wresting him to the ground on the sidewalk before the shooting. The situation is unfolding rapidly, with protesters being arrested, tear gassed and shot with less-lethal munitions. Protests are rapidly mobilizing and Gov. Walz has activated the State Emergency Operations Center. Please keep #Minneapolis and #Minnesota on your minds. #onassignment for the @startribune #photojournalism

Thousands of protesters gathered at a memorial for Renee Nicole Good, 37, who was shot and killed in her car by federal law enforcement earlier in the day on Portland Avenue near East 34th Street. Video of the shooting shows agents near the vehicle as Good reversed and then pulled forward. One agent appeared to fire multiple rounds into the car. ICE claims the agent acted defensively. #onassignment for the @startribune #minnesota #minneapolis #photojournalism

You blink, and suddenly that sleepy lil newborn is laughing and crawling and forming opinions of her own. Milestones happen in an instant. It’s hard to keep up. Lily is a ray of light with a megawatt smile. A child who loves music, dancing and clapping along to ‘If you’re happy and you know it.’ She gives wet kisses, spins sick beats on her DJ table and always shares her meatballs with the dog. Happy 1st Birthday to the best baby in the whole galaxy. 📸: Jedi @alexkormann12 (family photo) Pics 2,3,4,7: Daddy Pic 5&6: Mommy Special thanks to Auntie Susan @soosuhn for the epic royal icing cookies and @modernbeautywithdebbi for the amazing Princess Leia hair buns!

The Twin Cities set a new high-temperature record today, with a high of 54 degrees, the first time the metro area has seen a 50 degree Valentine’s Day since 1882. Jeffrey Powers gave his daughter Quinn, a ride on his shoulders as she basked in the warm sunlight at Theodore Wirth Regional Park. #onassignment for the @startribune

Some Gophers sports, as of late. Trying to get in the habit of posting a bit more this year. I’m forcing my students to post every week on Insta, so it’s only fair. #onassignment for the @startribune #sportsphotograpy #minneapolis #minnesota #gophers — last pic of me by the one-and-only @brad_rempel

More images from Saturday, in the aftermath of Alex Pretti’s killing by federal agents. Covering incidents like this takes on new challenges when you’re a first-time parent with an infant and when both mom and dad are covering the story. I’ve never had to worry about accidentally exposing a baby to tear gas powder on my clothes and car or having to bolt from an active scene due to childcare considerations. The surreal nature of waking up in the morning to a happy baby, going to cover a dreadful and dangerous situation, then going to pick up a blissfully-unaware and seemingly impossibly happy baby is a grounding experience that puts the job as a photojournalist and my job ad a dad in perspective. It also brings forth the realization that not everyone was able to go home to their families that day and many other days recently in Minnesota and beyond. Taylor Chaika, of St. Cloud, holds the US flag while protesting the death of Renee Nicole Good, 37, who was shot and killed by federal law enforcement Wednesday on Portland Avenue at East 34th Street Thursday, Jan. 8, 2026 in Minneapolis, Minn. “It’s unbelievable what happened here,” said Chaika. “I hope we can stand together, move forward and stop this awful fascism that’s taking over our country.” Chaika was one of more than a thousand protesters who marched against ICE and the Trump administration in Minneapolis Thursday night from Chicago and Lake to the site of the shooting at Portland and 34th Street. #onassignment for the @startribune #photojournalism #minnesota #ice

A few hundred people gathered at Minnehaha and Lake in Minneapolis to protest and march against US foreign policy and the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife. Across town in St. Paul, Venezuela-born restaurateur and political asylee Soleil Ramirez sips a top-shelf rum while watching a video of Maduro as he arrives in cuffs in New York. “Maduro wasn’t the president of Venezuela. He was the dictator of Venezuela,” said Ramirez. “I think this is a very big step, but it’s not the end,” she said. “Venezuela is not free yet.” #photojournalism #minnesota via @startribune reporting by @kyelandj
