Stop the subpoena! NYU Langone Hospitals is being ordered to turn over thousands of confidential medical records related to gender affirming care, which the federal government has labeled as “sex-rejecting procedures” and is now pursuing with a criminal investigation.

This June 5th, a Friday, ACT UP New York will be marking the 45th anniversary of the AIDS epidemic with a candlelight vigil and march, starting at the NYC AIDS Memorial. Though our times are often dark and difficult, we know that sinking into despair is not an option. We choose to believe in ourselves and our movements, and make space for light and love in our lives. Changing the world is a joyful and fulfilling process, and we let that show.
When my partner tried to get their first testosterone prescription, they were told no. Not by their doctor, but by an insurance company. They didn’t “meet the criteria.” Translation: your care costs too much.
In a time when it’s already scary to be trans in this country, these denials don’t just delay care but they make people feel unworthy, unsafe, and invisible.
Doctors are forced to negotiate instead of treat. Patients are forced to prove their pain. It becomes a test of endurance, and when you’re sick, scared, or exhausted, that’s when people give up. And not because they should, but because the system makes it too hard.
What hits hardest is that for me, it was easy. I filled my prescription and went home. Not because I deserved it more… I just got lucky. That’s not healthcare. That’s injustice.
Healthcare should meet need, not punish it. That’s why I support the New York Health Act: universal, single-payer care based on need, not income, identity, or insurance.
If you’ve been denied or delayed: you’re not imagining it. You’re not asking for too much. And you’re not alone. 💙
