Whether you're new here or you've known about PFLAG NYC for a long time, we thought it was time for a reintroduction! 🥳
We are the founding chapter of PFLAG, the first and largest family-based organization of LGBTQ+ people, parents, families, and allies, originally launched in 1973.
We are dedicated to:
🌈 Loving Families: We help families stay close and keep relationships strong when a child comes out as LGBTQ+ by offering diverse support groups, a helpline, and resources.
🌈 Safe Schools: We work with schools and students to raise awareness and end bullying by offering classroom presentations, educational professional development, and case support.
🌈 Inclusive Communities: We educate the general public through community outreach and advocacy work so LGBTQ+ youth can look forward to a bright and successful future.
In addition to following us on social media, the two best ways to stay involved and support us are:
💌 Subscribing to the PFLAG NYC email newsletter (🔗 in b!o to sign up)
💰 Making a donation on our website to support the work we're doing to keep families close, make schools safe, and help kids thrive.
Thank you for being a part of the PFLAG NYC family! The work we do would not be possible without our incredible community! 💖

Today is International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT), and we’re leaning hard into our vision for a world that is kinder and less cruel to all queer people.
Ideally, that world would already be here so LGBTQ+ people could experience the ease and peace they deserve in life. In place of that, we will not stop fighting to create the change we wish to see, one step at a time.
To the allies: we implore you to call out and correct discrimination against queer people when you see it, whether that’s at school, in the workplace, or on the street. The only way we can make the dream of a more LGBTQ+-friendly world a reality is to work together.
To the LGBTQ+ community: you’re incredible and beautiful. There’s nothing wrong with you, and there never has been. We hope that anyone who can’t see that yet catches up soon. 🩵
The PFLAG NYC staff is busy busy with Pride preparations, and we're looking for additional volunteers over the next two months!
For those of you who are outgoing and passionate about our work, tabling at Pride events may be a great fit. You'll work alongside a PFLAG NYC staff member to talk with folks about our programs and services and hand out swag.
Tabling events we need more volunteers for are:
🌈 GayRidge Pride on Sunday, 6/7, 12:00–5:00 p.m.
🌈 Brooklyn Pride on Saturday, 6/13, 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
🌈 Bronx Pride on Saturday, 6/20, 12:00–6:00 p.m.
🌈 Brooklyn Youth Pride on Saturday, 6/20, 12:00–5:00 p.m.
If you're a bit more reserved or don't like crowds, there are also two dates where we need volunteers to help us with organizing at the PFLAG NYC office in the West Village of Manhattan:
🌈 Tuesday, 6/23, 2:00–5:00 p.m.
🌈 Monday, 7/13, 2:00–5:00 p.m.
To sign up to volunteer, please email Philip at [email protected] and let us know what dates you're interested in!
It's also not too late to book us for a Pride event! If you, your workplace, or community are doing something for Pride and want to involve us, reach out to inquire about ways we can partner together this June. 🏳️🌈 🏳️⚧️
Last week, NYU Langone Hospitals received a grand jury subpoena from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Northern District of Texas. The subpoena directs them to provide patient information for anyone under 18 who received gender-affirming care between 2020 and 2026, as well as the names of providers who gave that care.
NYU Langone Hospitals are utilizing the protections provided by the New York State Shield Law, which requires that they attempt to notify the people the request affects at least 30 days before complying. So we have some time to tackle this together.
There is no question that this legal action is despicable, violating, and deeply unjust. We want to reassure all of our families that PFLAG NYC is working with many other legal and support organizations in New York to help ensure that you're protected from this horrible directive and to bolster you while you're navigating this news.
If you need support, we have free 1-on-1 coaching and support groups available. Our next TransFamilies Project meeting is May 26 from 6:30–8:00 pm ET. We also have a virtual workshop coming up next weekend that may be helpful for families, Finding Hope: Guidance for Supporting Those at Risk of Suicide, on May 22 from 6:00–7:30 pm ET. Check the 🔗 in our bio or DM us for more info about any of those services.
Please remember that you're not alone. There is an entire community rallying by your side, and all of us at PFLAG NYC are an active part of it. 🩵
PFLAG NYC, in partnership with NyJah Sterling of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, is hosting a two-part educational series about suicide awareness.
Join us for Part 1 during Mental Health Awareness Month on Friday, May 22, from 6:00–7:30 p.m. ET to learn how to show up for loved ones who have attempted suicide or are experiencing suicidal thoughts.
This virtual workshop will give participants practical guidance, tools, resources, and encouragement to support someone with “lived experience”—i.e., someone who has attempted suicide or experiences suicidal thoughts. The workshop will also provide participants with self-care strategies to use as they help their loved one navigate their recovery.
The workshop is free and will take place on Zoom. No replay will be available, so registrants must attend live.
Learn more and access the registration form through the 🔗 in our pr0file! And stay tuned for Part 2 of the series coming in June.
Happy Mother's Day to all of the PFLAG NYC moms! 💐
It's hard to believe that Jeanne Manford marched alongside her gay son Morty over 50 years ago in what would eventually become the NYC Pride March. Back then, it was revolutionary for a parent to carry a sign that said, "Parents of gays: unite in support of our children," yet Jeanne did so proudly.
It's a frightening time for many of us, but every mom who's showing up right now is making a true and powerful difference. So we want to say THANK YOU to all the moms and maternal figures (we're looking at you, our grandmas, aunties, big sisters, godmothers, drag mothers, and chosen moms) who give love and care to people in the LGBTQ+ community.
To every mom who has been to a support meeting, who has marched at Pride, who has shared their story, who has had a journey of acceptance while still leading with love, who stands up for an LGBTQ+ person during this tumultuous time: We see you, and we honor you. You give us much-needed hope. 💖
The recent Chiles v. Salazar Supreme Court decision both set a precedent on how conversion therapy is recognized in the U.S. and added to the confusion about what exactly conversion therapy is and what effects it can have on LGBTQ+ individuals and their families.
As part of our Mental Health Awareness Month programming, PFLAG NYC invites you to a virtual panel discussion on Monday, May 18, from 6:00–7:00 p.m. ET. For this panel, three experts will share about the misconceptions of conversion therapy while also providing strategies and understanding on how to affirm the LGBTQ+ loved ones in your life through faith. After, there will be time for Q&A.
The panelists are:
🌈 Dr. Lucas Wilson (he/him) | @lukeslamdunkwilson - Editor of Shame-Sex Attraction: Survivors' Stories of Conversion Therapy and a conversion therapy survivor
🌈 Timothy Schraeder Rodriguez (he/him) | @timothy.s.rodriguez - Author of Conversion Therapy Dropout and a conversion therapy survivor
🌈 Elizabeth Delgado Black (she/her) | @kaleidoscope.usa - Minister and Co-Founder & CEO of Kaleidoscope Ministries
The panel will take place on Zoom and is free to attend (no replay will be available, so registrants must attend live). Learn more and access the registration form through the 🔗 in our bio.
The Community Gems series is designed to inform PFLAG NYC families and community members about our partner organizations and the services they have available.
For our next installment, join us on Tuesday, May 12, from 6:00–8:00 p.m. ET for an engaging and informative virtual session about Project LEAP at CAMBA (@proyecto.leap | @cambainc ) and the Gerald J. Friedman Transgender Program at Lenox Hill Hospital (@lenoxhillhospitalnyc ).
Gloria Soto (she/her) will share about Project LEAP’s bilingual (English and Spanish) educational and support services for parents and family members of LGBTQ+ youth. And Deeangelys Colon (she/her) will speak about the Friedman Transgender Program’s trans-affirming medical services and comprehensive care. There will also be time for Q&A from attendees.
The workshop will take place on Zoom and is free to attend (no replay will be available, so registrants must attend live). Learn more and access the registration form through the 🔗 in our bio.
Happy Lesbian Visibility Day!!! 🌈
We're celebrating lesbians today and every day. The LGBTQ+ community would simply not be the same without lesbians and their collective joy, advocacy, love, friendship, and rich history.
If you're lucky enough to have lesbians in your life, hang onto them! 💖
It’s National Volunteer Appreciation Week, and we’re not exaggerating when we say that the work we do would not be possible without our volunteers! 💖
The hundreds of folks who generously donate their time, expertise, stories, and passion to our programs are why we can offer free services like support groups, support coaching, school programming, community workshops, and more. We regularly receive amazing comments from the people our volunteers interact with about the kind and caring ways they show up.
Take a look at some of the glowing feedback for our volunteers in this post, and consider signing up to volunteer yourself! We have multiple volunteer opportunities available, both in NYC and virtually, that fit varying schedules and levels of commitment.
Learn more and apply to volunteer with us through the 🔗 in our b!o or by typing this URL into a web browser: /volunteering.
To our past and current volunteers—THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO! Our staff members are constantly floored by your commitment to a better future for the LGBTQ+ community. We love and admire you.
